I bought one Friday for the cabinet installer.
I had loaned him the fein that morning and he loved it so when I did my daily run to Lowes I swung across the street and got one.
Those blades are wimpy compared to the ones I get online and won't fit in the new Fein.
But having a throwaway version at 10% of the cost of mine has its appeal.
Anyway cabinet guy loves it and can't get over the fact that I would spend 40$ on him.
And I can't get over how cheap it cost me to get that look of disbelief on the old codger.

Definition of 'old codger' please, was that my 80 YO uncle? <G>
BTW, I'm holding out till HF has a $8.99 special on the MM clone, the 4" angle grinder are about the same mfg cost in China, and they go for as low as $6.99 at times.

I've got the HF Multimaster and we used it last week to scrape painted texture off the ceiling
Worked pretty good
BTW, if you buy the HF Router speed controller ($20), you can have an infinitly variable speed control similar to the Fein.

Sweet - I have never heard thatthanks
I bought one recently and figured the saw would come in handy sometime. I got to use it last week and it exceeded my expectations by a lot. It worked great for cutting rectangular holes in 3/4" redwood paneling and siding to add electrical boxes. It made short work of cutting out a damaged section of t&g and the scraper (I had assumed would be worthless did a great job of removing some old roofing tar globbed up on some exterior siding). My only complaint was that the store only had replacement blades in a combo pack of two scrapers and one blade in stock. I plan on going through more blades than scrapers so I need to mail order some blades from them.I couldn't ever justify spending over a hundred dollars on a type of saw that I will use this infrequently but I give this one thumbs up at 39 dollars.Karl
Thanks hadn't thought about using it for thatI will be using mine tomorrow to trim spray foam around a windowI would like to have a tool bag to carry mine in and I need to go to Goodwill to buy a bag with a zipper to carry it inI;ve seen them at Goodwill - they are the bag that says "adidas" on the side and they were sold for sports equipI will use it to keep the tool and extra blades
I bought several of these when they were on sale for $5.99. They're actually pretty well made, and after all, it only seems fitting to store a HF multimaster in a HF tool bag. I keep my Fein in one.
Hey I like that
Yesterday I went to the local HF to look at their clone. What I found were three incomplete display models, none in stock, and no accessories or blades.
It looks like they're hot sellers.
NOW ... what I'd really like to hear are some first-hand comparisons of the HF (and other clones) vs. the Fein. Just how much 'better' is the tool that costs 10x as much?
A review I read, stated the only significant difference was the original had variable speed. That can be fixed by buying a seperate variable speed made for a router.
My local store now has about 25 in stock, with , finally plenty of blades. All can be bought individually. Buy several as they don't last all that long.
My personal fealing is it is actually a pretty nice tool. It isthe reason, I have bought several tools from them for occasional use.
I understand their tile saw is a pretty good tool. On sale next weekend for $119.
The word from the local manager is that the tools are getting better as they are seeing fewer and fewer returns of any of their tools.
One thing I like is their hand tools carry a lifetime guarentee!!!! Looks like they are using the old Sears model of no hasstle returns on them!!!
Any tool with a warranty is worth the money, even if it isn't such a great tool. I bought a pack of chisels thinking that they would be throw aways about a year ago. Some of them have seen heavy use, the 1/2" stays in my tool pouch on the weekends, and other than occasional sharpening, still going strong.
I swore I'd never by another air tool after my compressor blew up after only several months. I got an email from them for a cap stapler for $70 and bought it for an upcoming roofing job. It's lasted three jobs (little jobs, spaced apart). I baby it and it skips, but at $70 I can buy another two at the cost of a Bostitch. I don't do this everday, and if I did, I'd buy the Bostitch without thinking twice, but for me, the HF stuff is there in a pinch. Now if only they would build the tools here, and not China!
Now if only they would build the tools here, and not China>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Good luck with that. It appears al the tools are made in China now, or soon will be!
I do think your on to something. The quality does seem to be a little better.
Have you seen any feedback on the Bosch or Dremel Multimasters?
The Bosch is a good machine, limitation being the battery life.
The dremel, overheating in repetitive use.
used my HF multimaster again today... was installing electric deadbolt releases / latches in my doors for the access control system... i trimmed down a cutting blade so that it's about 3/4" wide... I've been use'n it to cut around strike plates... screw em into place... cut around em... remove strike plate .... then proceed as normal... pretty easy to control how deep you are cutting... anyway it works for me...I see now why people bragged about the Fein... I'm amazed at the time the HF tool saves mep
I see now why people bragged about the Fein... I'm amazed at the time the HF tool saves me>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I will second that. Never could bring myself to pull the trigger for $300. But I will tell you, if my HF model burned out, I would be down there tomorrow buying another.
Have you seen the battery operated one yet? I really think I might buy one of them!
I have vinyl siding on lowe half of my home. Put a deck and patio in this summer. It worked great for cutting the vinyl. Saved my carpel tunnel with the snips!!
Harbor Freight has a cordless multifunction tool?
I haven't seen it. If you find any more info about it, please post it.
All in all, I've been pretty happy with my HF purchases.
It's even LiIon, and I think it cost $79. Haven't seen one in the store yet though.

I'm looking at buying a nail gun for doing framingHere is what they're selling for $89http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=98917I would be using it one or two days a month doing some kind of minor framing such as framing in a closet thanks for any input
Now is a very good time to buy one on Ebay.I recently bought a HITACHI NR83A2s, lightly used, for $96.00 shipped. One of the best framing nailers there is.Why buy cheap junk?View Image
Wow you got a great dealI'll check ebayThanks
I ran an ad on CL yesterday saying I want to buy a used framing nailerI got two responsesOne response was "Husky framing nailer for $50"The second response was "slightly used ridgid for $100"I'm leaning toward the ridgid - it sold new for about $229 at HD
The only proble is the 28 degree nails. They are a little hard for me to come by. Same nails as my part time craftsman, in fact they look identical.
Take your chances. If it doesn't work, take it back. Save your reciept!
"Never could bring myself to pull the trigger for $300. "I hear you there. I got mine online, I forget where, but it was reconditioned with a full guarantee and it was the old model Fein so it all the other brand blades fit it.I think I paid $175, which hurt, but not as much as 3 bills.
I don't regret it a bit. The Fein really performs.
My partner bought a Dremel multimaster. I’ve used the Fien... and the Dremel knockoff doesn’t hold a candle to it. It has, give or take, the same power draw for the motor... but it overheats with extended use. And, for reasons that I don’t understand, it has to work a lot harder to do the same amount of work.
But the real killer for the Dremel is that the trigger gave up, without a sigh, after about 5 hours of hard use.
The Fein oscillating multimaster tool patent is history. But it looks like no other manufacturer has been able to step up and build a viable alternative at a reduced cost even though they saw it coming a long time ago.
FYI: the Bosch blades fit the HF, and are much better quality.
Thanks I was wonder ing that. I got a HF mm for tight spots.Webby
I suggest you go to harbor freight and spend $35 dollars. It is equal to the MM except for the variable speed. I really mean it. I am not kidding! (blades are cheap also)
Folks keep mentioning the variable speed of the Fein ....
I've been using a Fein that does NOT have variable speed. Maybe it's an older model, I don't know; but for my use - cutting holes in drywall - it doesn't matter.
The unit is simply great; great control with little airborne dust. If I need to make a slight adjustment to my hole, no problem. If the rock is weak, patched, or poorly supported - no problem.
I've been using a Fein that does NOT have variable speed.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
That is from a review I read. Must be their latest and greatest. I know I lovew my HF, and at $35, if it breaks, go get another. Works as well as the fein from the reviews, I'm happy!!!
Ok, I've had my Fein for .............I'd have to ask my supplier. Not 10 yrs, maybe 8. I use it constantly and have not babied it. It has needed a couple of the mounting screws and one sanding pad. I didn't pay 300.
If I go to the box in the van, I know it will run.
There's some value to satisfaction and stamina.

I consider the $220 that I spent on my old style MM (mod. 636?) some of the most well spent of my tool money. I also would buy the same machine again in a heartbeat.Variable speed (to slow DOWN the speed) on the oscillating tools is really useful in burn-prone operations like sanding and scraping, and can help to control a cut. Note that I really have great cut control with my Fein even at full speed!View Image

I saw a commercial for one of the knock-offs the other day, and I just don't get it. I didn't see what that tool could do better than other tools I own that can do it better.
Granted, I'm sure it beats carrying all of those tools, but I don't like to play around. I want the best tool for the job, not an OK tool for every job. Somebody, please, tell me why I've just got to have one!
I appreciate your lack of enthusiasm.
The tool isn't really essential - but for a few select tasks, it does them better than anything else.
Take my use as an example. I often have to instal an electrical box in a finished wall, and the job site is quite often a furnished, occupied office.
Sure, I can make the hole using a keyhole saw, but that's slow, and nearly impossible if the wall is anything but sheetrock.
I could use a saber saw, but the show marks up the wall, and dust flies everywhere. Roto-zip has the same issue.
With the multi-master, I get a neat hole quickly, and do it without filling the air with dust. There's even less dust than when I cut by hand!
Taking another example - I need to make a larger hole in a wall. If I can cut from the middle of a stud to the middle of a stud, I can use the removed piece to patch the hole, and it will be well supported. Hwo do you make that cut?
A circular saw - talk about filling the air with dust! Ditto the Roto-zip. Saber saw is great for the field, but can't cut atop the stud. Hand saw has the same issues.
Not the Multi-master, You can go right down that stud face, zip across the field - then hook the piece and pull it out. Want to make the cut at an inside corner? The multi can reach in there.
So, while the Multi-master is not essential - and most certainly will not replace any tool - it is a handy addition to the truck.
You're right to a degree. Other tools can do the job, but better?......mmmm, maybe in some instances, but I would have to disagree there.
I'm not sure what line you're in but I do a ton of repair, restoration, & retro-fits, also a lot of cabinet installs. The MM is indispensable for all that. What it is really great at is getting into difficult places and making clean straight cuts. It also switches heads to sand in tiny corners & nooks, and it also has a head for removing grout & mortar.
Do I absolutely need it? No.Would I ever be without it now? No way.
I will no longer encourage the effectiveness of the Multimaster. Too damn many people have it now and can perform the magic.
Keep using whatever you have and don't bother spending the money

"tell me why I've just got to have one!"
Flush cutting. Say you need to take out 4 ft of baseboard over a hardwood floor to install a heater. Lots of things you used to use chisels for are much easier with a mm.
Exactly. It's like an electric chisel.View Image
couldn't agree more.
Earlier this year, I was installing 2 walkin closets and a storage space. Client wanted it in an existing built-out attic with carpet. They wanted the carpet to remain. so I had to lay out walls and cut the carpet out for the bottom plates. I had the MM but did not realize that I could have done all the cutting with it. I cut everything by hand and took forever to do it, at that. I am just finishing a staircase where I had to cut back carpet to get to trim in hallway. Took just seconds with the MM. I used it for two or three other functions, as well, on that job. It now goes everywhere on every job, period.
At its most basic level, capitalism offers people the freedom to choose where they work and what they do … the dignity that comes with profiting from their talent and hard work. … The free-market system also provides the incentives that lead to prosperity -- the incentive to work, to innovate, to save and invest wisely, and to create jobs for others.†-President George W. Bush
In other words, free-market capitalism is the best path to prosperity.
I was browsing the aisles of Harbor Freight just yesterday in fact because I wanted to see about a tile saw. I saw their version of MM and it actually looked & felt pretty damned good. I'm sorry now that I didn't pick up any of the blades, but I will.
I ended up buying about $35 of just small stuff that would otherwise cost me a lot more.
It's a tempting place that store and I'm just glad it's over the river in Jersey so it's more of a trip.
I have purchased a number of things at HF and found many of them to be fine. I do admit that I've had to return some items in order to obtain one that works correctly, but there has never been a difficulty when I went to return an item. Two months ago I purchased the dust collector for $139 plus tax and added a Wynn filter and a baffel. It works very well. However, my neighbor, upon seeing my dust collector went a bought one, two days after I bought mine, same store, and he had to return it and get a new one because the first one would trip the 20 amp breaker every time. The start circuit had problems. The second one is fine. I'll start looking at their multimaster after reading these posts.
Another testimonial for the MM: grout removal. With the dedicated carbide blade, I've done an entire kitchen floor of 12x12 tiles. It was so easy and pleasant that I was disappointed when I was done and was ready for more.I can't think of ANY tool that will do this better.View Image
Do the HF blades fit the old MM? I saw the HF knockoff yesterday. It's clunkier, in a wider and taller way, than the MM. The blades looked a little weak, and the 3 pack had 2 scraper blades... how many of them do you need?!? They did have a round diamond blade for 10 bucks... if it fits the MM, looks like the cat's rear for cleaning grout/thinset.http://www.tvwsolar.com

I second the grout removal blade. My Fein is about 8 yrs old and i can't tell you how many different jobs i have used it on, I think it cost me about $175 at the time. Just yesterday i had to remove about 4 tiles on a back splash and the carbide blade went thru the grout like buttah. i would like to have the new one with the quick change system but it's not that big of a deal.
Holly, from what I hear it does. However, for the Bosch blades to fit and hold you need the star washer and abrasive washer that allows pretty firm locking using the new fein blades in the old style saw.
So, if you have the washers I'm thinking it's worth a try.
If it works, buy another one of those diamond blades and send me one.

cal, I had to rip some installed Hardi siding about 4" from the ground... didn't want to suck a lot of dust, so I went back to HF for the diamond blade.I picked up two of them, and two of their others. 6-8 bucks ea. On the way out they had the multi master well placed for an impulse buyer... got me. Figured I'd rather fill that up with concrete dust than the Fein.Cashier rang it up, knocked off 20%, then slipped in the 2yr insurance policy when I wasn't looking<G>The HF multi took forever to cut a scrap of Hardi. The diamond blade has a rim of diamond chunks, not like a tile blade. I put the blade on the Fein, and it worked a little better. Must be more travel in the ossilation?I did use the HF multi for some little cuts, Corey cut off door shims for a 1/2hr, then it quit... I hope my insurance rate doesn't go up, ha.I'm sending you the extra diamond blade LOLhttp://www.tvwsolar.com

I think it was just some spooky part of campus lore, but like I said, so cryptic that you half-believed there was some germ of truth to it. Kind of got the impression that it had been told since the 1930s or something.Spent 2 years in Hamilton for grad school. Absolutely spectacular setting, and I can bet it's beautiful for cycling. I was just running when I was there, and didn't get into triathlon until a year later.Miss that area terribly in the Fall. (and thinking that a sander would be best left to the corded variety)Which makes the price not so unattractive anymore.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb
View Image
I wouldn't sand large areas with it, but for small jobs it works well. I don't have the profile accessories, so I don't know how well that works. But be careful about the speed- slower is better. The sand paper last longer, and the scratches from the sanding seems less pronounced.
I bought a detail sander awhile back, I think if you have a lot of sanding, I would go for the specialized tool.
Really, you ought to look at the HF version to at least start with. It is now 29.95. Talk about a throwaway tool!!
Dave,Thanks for the info. Got to admit that I'd feel a bit dirty at shopping at HF. Rather see my money spent here or Japan/Europe where there's at least a decent chance it's going towards keeping someone employed in a democratic-capitalistic society. Snow in the Chenango Valley yet?Best,

Snow in the Chenango Valley yet?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Don't know, heard there might have been.
In the Mohawk Valley, we haven't had any.
As far as fealing dirty, remember most tools are being made in China now, it does seem that HF has made a concerted effort to upgrade their tool line. I find it to be a good place to pick up throwaway tools and tools I won't be using much.
I haven't sanded with it yet. It cuts well thou. So far it has only had rough service with
me. Long cuts through two layers of parquet flooring and
some of the thickest Greek crown I've come across.
Oh yeah, a bunch of drywall cut outs (one of my favorite uses). It does the job and the blades are good quality (plus it will
take the Dremel and Fien blades too). Five minutes per charge, so it will have you running to the
charger if you have a project going on. Not sure I could recommend it over the Fien, but we do retrofit
type work constantly, perhaps most people would find it adequate.
I can't imagine five minutes of sanding
would get most jobs done.
Thanks a bunch. One more question for you.Since I see several people mentioning using these for drywall cutouts, do they blow a huge cloud of dust around like a rotozip? If not, I think I'm sold on getting one.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb
View Image
No, the dust is very minimal. I use the half circle Dremel blade.
For cutting drywall, I use the drywall blades from Multiblades. Very little dust and long-lasting blade for $7.
Do you mean this one?-
http://multiblades.com/images/sd_sup.JPG I haven't tried that yet, thanks for the tip.PS
I find the half circle shape helpful when cutting
a long line.
Yup, that's the one. Just be sure to check the arbor hole configuration.
Ok, so that 'one more question' part wasn't accurate, LOLYou were messing about with some rigid foam, IIRC. Did you try cutting that with the MM?'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb
View Image
Nope. Just get one already! If you keep this up I'll tell Frammer52 you need a coupon.
LOL, OK, OK. I put it at the top of my birthday list. Let's see if I've been a good boy this year!'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

I'll agree: very little dust in the air. Instead, the dust seems to be larger particles, that either just sit atop the blade, or fall to the floor.
I'm using a borrowed Fein, with a limited blade assortment. The nearly round carbide grit blade workes quite well on drywall; perhaps a toothed one would work even better.
Thanks. I've already dreamed up a couple of dozen uses for it, but the sanding and dust-reduced drywall cutting seal it.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

Maybe we could convince Fein to sell MM franchises, with protected areas of use.

So whats the final verdict on this one - waste of money or not?
Depends on who you ask. My money is still on the Fein. For the basic tool, $200 or a little less can't be beat for a tool that will last through A LOT of use.If you are an occasional user, it seems that folks like the HF version fine, so far.View Image
Danno, you ask
"So whats the final verdict on this one - waste of money or not?"Not in any way a waste of money. I sat on the fence looking at these tools by various makers for a year. I saw it for 30 bucks at harbor freight and figured I would give it a try and return it if I didn't like it.There is no way I will be returning it. The thing is awesome at doing all the stuff described. I will likely only use it for jobs that used to require a chisel to get square cuts.Buy the cheap one and see if you use it. If you use it enough to wear it out then buy yourself a Fein. If you can't wear it out then you saved enough money to buy yourself an additional tool. What is the worst thing that is going to happen if you buy it?Karl
I bought a portable blower today at HFhttp://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93231Paid $54 for itSeems like it moves a lot of airHas variable speed switch
My stepson bought one of the vacumns for the lathe I bought. Nice and quiet. Portable, uses it instead of my heavy ridgid!
timely post ,,,was gonna buy it the other day when I went to buy the
$9.99 "dremmel" , But passed..Gonna be close next week so will get one...
Bud
DON'Y buy that 9.99 dremel. It is worse than krap.BUT... The more expensive one... Larger. Red body... Is better than the crafstman knockoff. At least as good as the real dremel, and possibly more powerful. That bigger, red one is worth buying. At about 18 dollars, it is still only about a quarter the price of the real dremel....You are always welcome at Quittintime
Yea, its not to great, I already bought it and passed on the MM. I am only gonna use it to cut cables for my bicycle, and it works ok for that.
I may pick up the red one when I go back and get the MM next week
Thanks for the tip..
Bud
I'm thinking real hard on getting the HF Multimaster, mostly due to its price. I've wanted the real deal for years, but couldn't justify it. And really, my biggest beef is not the cost of the tool but of the accessories, which didn't seem to last very long.
Question is, has anyone used all 3 of the Fein, Dremel, and HF to provide a comparison?
I don't really mind dropping the $400 to get a tool that will last a lifetime, but if the consumables are going to eat me alive it may not be worth it. Maybe a cheaper clone is better if the quality of alternative accessories is comparable.
Any thoughts from those that have used more of the models to compare?
As a matter of fact, I have the Fein, the Dremel, and the HF.The fein rocks, no doubt ( I have the "old style", before it was touted as a MM, just a snader with some blades that work) but the cost of blades was, WAS the killer. Then I made a few..eh, nothing special, Ilearned the LENGTH is tres important, to oscillate properly. And spinning was a problem, I lost the original screw sometime and am using the sander head screw with a cup washer. Then I gotthe Dremel just for kicks and aback up...I liked it, didn't use it hard, and keep it in the van all the time. Just Wed and today I was cutting rectangular gutter drops in 3/4" soffit, and box gutter bottom. Used the Dremel cuz it was unburied in the van. Absolutley NO complaints, and I was pushing it, smoking the 3/4" wide blade and cutting copper as well.A few weeks ago, I got the HF, in case the Dremel dies..only made a few cuts ( like cut out the panels of a masonite hollow door, for air flow) and was NOT impressed with the circ. blade..cheap steel, lotta paint, and dull.So today I was at HD, and found a disply ( hands on use) of the dremel, BUT they were low on blades, and I already know about the dremel blades..pretty good. But I saw the bosch blades, so I bought a 1" wide and a circ. ( the circ says wood/metal, I cut copper a lot) blade. As I went to install the blade on the Dremel , No joy..it won't fit. It WILL fit the OLD Fein, but I didn't install it yet on that or the HF...
What I'm saying is Dremel seems to take it's blades only. All are exactly what you'd expect for the price, the Drem is vari spd. but I use full tilt ahead all the time, the Fein is single spd ( that I have) and the HF is single. As an aside, in '89 when I got the fein, I was cutting duct boot holes in 3/4 sub floor and it just broke somethng inside, I sent it back and they sent a new one No questions asked, that was 7 corners Ace , before internet for me.
Thats all I got so far, I an't broke any of em yet, and have pushed hard.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Without a doubt sears is the place to buy blades a 2 pack of wood/metal bades is 13$ and they fit the new fein as well as the old style MM's.
I have bought the HF for my cabinet guy as he was elated when I loaned him the MM so when I went to lunch I swung by HF and picked him up one as a gift.
I like the cost but I would still spring for the full kit by fein with variable speed, no tool change ability, sanding pads, rasp and contour sander profiles.

I also think HF blades suck. Does anyone knoe if the Bosch blades will fit the HF?
I have used the HF and the Fein. I still can't justify the price difference, if we can get decent blades for the HF.
I just now tried, and yup, the Bosch fit the HF.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I guess I will have to try their blades.
That's it, Duane, I think you now have the title for the most MM tools!!!!
You oughtta see me angle grinder stable, I hate changing attachments.I think I have 7 now. One DW corded is just for my welding box, 3-4 Corded HFs,just for wood cleanup ( Log house remember?) and my cordless with Diamond mostly just for cutting counterflashings in.I quit counting drills/impacts and routers.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I got a collection of HF blades the last time I was there. The 1" wide flush cut blade is great, as is the carbide grit grout/thinset blade. I had to rip a bit off the bottom course of some already installed Hardi lap siding The circular diamond blade works, slowly, but it works, and without a lot of airborn dust.http://www.tvwsolar.com

The problem here with HF is the blades are kept off the shelf somewhere in the back. If you ask someone for something, it's like the land of no return, they never come back.I only used the round one that came with it, not the straight one yet. Seems to me the carbide grit would do hardie as well as a diamond? And I don't even have a carbide grit, I steer away from tile when ever posssible, just not my forte.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

The closest HF to me has the blades in a cage near the front, and you would think there were tigers in it, the way the floor walkers avoid you when you want to get in<G>The carbide grit I tried was even slower than the diamond blade, and the HF multi tool couldn't cut it. I got it to save the Fein, but it only lasted 1 day, ha. It'll be an insurance policy test LOLhttp://www.tvwsolar.com

Also, bear in mind, the HF only has 4 pins. The Dremel is loaded with a slew, seems that grinding 3 of the HF pins off would allow ANY blade with pin holes to work. AFAIK, the 10MM center hole remains the same, with the exception of the Star blades by Fein.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
