Hidden door in bookcase

Hjelm | Posted in General Discussion on February 3, 2007 08:36am

I have a client who wants me to build a hidden door to his home office in a bookcase. I did one a few years ago and it came out pretty good. I used SOSS hinges. He wants the latch to be a sliding book or a swiveling wall sconce  or something out of a Vincent Price movie. Any suggestions?

try searching in FHB articles, I remember that they did an article on that exact thing within the last two years, including some latch and lock options.

Seems to me that the book thing would be the easiest and less dangerous of the two. I'm thinking a book with a hollowed out space in which you could glue a block of wood and maybe an eye-screw, then wire rope, a pulley mounted behind the door that would activate a latch or series of latch when tipped.

Here is a link to a threada I started before doing similar. There were a lot of good links and advice suggested there.

I finally finished the unit and the painters have it now. I am planning a touch catch with this one. It is flawlessly smooth and moves accurately into place, even with my 210# lead man riding it.

I haven't enough time to read all of that but I'm building a simple book case "next to the throne" in the bathroom I'm in the middle of building.
Theres a storage area behind it so I figure I'll make the book case removable to access the storage area.
I just thought...why not put casters on the bottom of the case behind the kick and just remove the kick or put hinges on top of the kick to swing it up and roll her out? Hmmmmm...sorry, just thinkin' out loud.

        I've done that too.
Another thing for a space that only needs tobe accessed once a year, like this for shutting down water and draining lines or servicing shower valve - a storage cabinet with casing as part of it. The cab sliudes in on a two by rail under it, then fastens with a couple of screws inside the cab left and right to studs.

This must be easy to accomplish. I see them in every episode of 'Scooby Doo'!

I hear some choice shows are being re-formatted into HD so you should be able to freeze frame and with a good 1080p screen and the blue-ray disc player be able to zoom in and determine the hardware details and required mechanisms involved.
