Thursday I installed some decrorative column wraps to hide the steel posts.
I’ll see if I can post the picture instead of the little yellow boxes!
Edit, well I couldnt do it so you have to click on the yellow box!
EDIT; Thanks to Mike Smith via Jeff Buck for the instructions on how to imbed the pix.
first pic is the three steel posts.
Second pic has one of the column bases lined up.
Third pic has the second half of the column base in place
Fourth pic is the sub top installed on the leveled up bases.

steel
Sorry bout that!
My spelling sux and spell check dont know the diff.
"steel"We haven't seen the receipt yet. They may have been shopping in Ponytl's yard and they are a steal..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I know those lolly pole are adjustable, but that bottom adjustment looks weak. Do they shim them or leave alone.
sp15, sp16, sp18 shows the columns being glued up around the steel posts.
sp20 shows the three columns in place, sanded and waiting for the trim to be added, that will happen next week. In the background Dave set the last base with the final column in clamps.
All this is cherry and will be finished in place.

those are quite the wraps,i hit the pic thinking i was going to see one of those 2 pc glued together deals. those look great ,that looks like a heck of a basement finish. larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
Doug,
The column wraps look really good. I think you have the same work ethic as I. That is, 'No exposed fasteners' (not including paint grade).
Are those raised panels or applied?
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Chuck
No raised panels.
If you could see the panel better you'd see that there is an applied moulding on the inside of the styles and rails.
When I go back Monday I'll get a better shot of it.
Doug
as usual .. looks great.
and ... not sure if it's the camera angle or what ... but the recessed panel looks really recessed ... looks way deep ... very cool.
now ... open a pic ....U right click on a pic ... and copy.
then .. go back ... reply to your own post ... and hit edit.
put the blinking curser where U want the pic to pop up in ...
and paste.
and wait a second or two ... doesn't always take right away.
but it will ...
the "apply" or what ever that choice it ...
and bingo ...
pic's inserted right into your post.
that's how I have to do it ... post it like U did first ... then go back and edit.
the master Mike Smith showed me the way ...
btw ... one of my favorite things ... hiding the lally's ... just plain more fun that a straight out empty column ...

Thanks Jeff, I'll give your method a try on Monday when I do some more work on the columns.
I've been back here for 5 months and this is the second cool house that I have got to work on.
Doug
try it now ...
edit yer post dammit!!
like I said ... I post like U did ... then right away edit that very same post.
and add the pics.
give it a shot ...
helps to have a fresh/cold beer in hand.

Jeff,
My Mom grew up in Mount Washington, on Bertha Street, took the incline to school.
We went to Kennywood Park when visiting our cousins.
Is Tambolini's still around?
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Tambolini's is still in business ... down on rt 51.
my house is pretty much halfway between Bertha and Tambolini's!
if anyone remembers Grandview Park ... and the watertowers ... that's about a 3 minute walk from my porch.
Kennywood ... that's closer to where I grew up.
Swissvale PA ... "the Kennywood Exit" of the parkway!
they still win awards from the Real Coaster people ... for having the best old wooden rollercoasters ... pretty good park actually ... keep enough of the old and add in alot of new stuff.
if yer Mom is still around and she needs dug out after tonights ice storm drop me a line!

My Mom is still around. Today, no yesterday, 2/24, was her 91st Birthday. She lives in Bethesda MD now. Thanx for the dig out offer.

I just did it, work good except I screwed up on the final pic and dont want to try to edit that but now I know how!
And your right, a cold beer in the hand does help.
Doug
Very sweet, Post a pic when they are finished too. I have a friends walkout that could use something along those lines.
Post a pic when they are finished too.
they'll be done next week and I'll post finish pix - well, minus the finish! Our finish guy is doing a cool den that we finished up last week so it'll be awhile for that part.

BTW- Nice work. For posting pics inline, you can use some simple HTML codes. I will post the codes in the next post.

All you have to do to get inline pics is past the following code in the message box:<img src=>You attach your pics like you normally would, then click on "preview" right next to the blue "post" button. Open the attached pics in a new window and copy their location from the URL bar up above.Return to the "Compose Message" screen and paste the location between the equal sign and the end bracket and then click "apply". Make sure you click the "Check here if HTML tags are in the message" and you're off.It sounds a lot harder and more time consuming that it really is. I find it easier to do that editing the post multiple times.

Thanks and I'm going to give your and Jeffs way a shot! One of them ought to work.
Doug
Maybe I missed it. What did you use to fasten it all together? Biscuits?
Think ya used enough dynamite there, Butch?
Gunner
I'm going to assume that you meant that question to me?
No biscuits, just glued and clamped the end piece on. Couldnt use biscuits because of the chamfered corners - well maybe we could have gotten by with the "0" size not real sure. Glue will hold it just fine!
At the top and bottom I will run a few sheetrock screws (my second favorite type of screw!!!) that will be hidden by the trim. If you look in the lower right hand corner of one of the pictures of the three lallys you'll see a wall that has this detail (half columns on the wall) and you can see what the trim will look like when complete.
Doug
DougU,
That looks great, I have a basement remodel coming up in October, you care if I use this idea?
Nailer
you care if I use this idea
As long as you dont do it right next door to this house!
Of course you can, what else are these pic's good for if not to steal ideas.
Doug
Gotta try this post all the pictures in full view thing.
The steel lally column
View Image
Set the base, attach to the wall, cannot tapcon to the floor because of infloor heat so a little PL on some glue blocks and cleats inside the boxes will hold it all in place, well that and gravity!
View Image
Wall is not perfect so I need to scribe the half column - we make all of our stuff that goes against the wall with an extra 1/2" built in just for scribes.

All scribed and fitted/attached to the wall.

Pic above is the glue up of the full column and the pic below is everything all sanded up waiting for the trim work to be completed.

ok ... how'd U do that!
dont know!
I got it right in another post though, I think my problem is that I'm not spacing between pics. I need to hit the enter key so theres room between the pics for text and so forth.
Edit; I thought you meant the post # 3, not the latest one with pics.
I did it your way but I edit out the "edits" you know, highlight them and hit back space. You will only have the one edit(your latest) show up.
Master Mike aint showing you all he knows!

You must have responded while I was editing the other post.
Its your way, I just edit out the "edits" - highlight them and hit spacebar.
I will give Jons way a try but I need to study it first.

Great work Doug! Wish I had the patience for such craftsmanship.Live in the solution, not the problem.
To be honest with you, if you use Internet Explorer I think my method is probably not necessary.
I prefer Mozilla so I started getting into HTML from a post Luke made in the Tavern a few years ago showing some simple HTML codes.
As I said, once you get it down it's almost like second nature. I'm glad I have a rudimentary (very rudimentary) understanding of HTML because I've found it helps me with a lot of other stuff on the web.
For instance, I can make text bold, blue, or big.
If you want to learn more, check out the post by Luka that I referred to earlier.

Thanks for the link but I cant go in the tav, self imposed exile, I'll send Luka an e-mail and he can walk me through it.

Doug,Here it is:+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++A quick course on the basic HTML codes you can use in the posts here...<br> Will produce a line break.<p> Starts another paragraph. (Produces a line break between paragraphs.)<font size=***> The *** is the number. It is better not to put an actual number here, like 1 through 7 or whatever. It is better to put -1 through -2 at the most, up through +1 and +2 at the most. Otherwise, you risk the ire of a bunch of us old coots that feel our eyes assaulted by the really big or really small font sizes.Plus the fact that doing a plus or minus in size leaves the original font to be decided by the software, based on each person's individual settings. So if you write font size=1, and someone has their default set to say 14 point, the font size you set, makes it an absolute one. VERY hard to read. If not impossible. But if you write font size=-2, the software takes their preference of 14pt, and makes it a size 12pt. Not -quite- so aggravating to old eyes. LOL<font color="""> The *** can be absolute colors like white, red, blue, navy, yellow, etc. Or they can be numbers/characters. The numbers will be preceded by a pound sign, and will be a combination of all numbers, all characters, or some of both.Either one of those codes should be "turned off" at the end of the paragraph with </font>You'll have to find an html guide to get the numbers and characters. Or maybe I'll come back later when I have time again, and list some of the common ones.<i> Will italisize all writing after it. It is turned off with </i><b> Will bold all writing after it. It is turned off with </b><u> Will underline all writing after it. It is turned off with </u>As I said above, <img src=""> With the url of the image pasted between the quote marks makes an image appear in the post.<a href=""> example </a>With the above... You paste the url of any web page in between the quotes.Where it says example, you write what you want your link to say. Keep it to a very few words. With the whole thing in your post you will get an active link to that web page, and all the viewer will see will be the word or words you write in place of example. They will be underlined, and an obvious link. Usually blue in color in the final post.Again, if you use code in the post, you have to check the box below that says there is code in the post. Also, if you do any of this, then you have to work out the code for the rest of the post as well, or it will simply all run together. In other words, you will have to be sure there is a <p> before every paragraph beginning. Etc...As an aside, most people will tell you that you have to close the <p> for new paragraph, at the end of a paragraph as well with </p>. But I have not closed them for years, and never had a problem. I put the <p> at the beginnning of each paragraph, and omit the </p> at the end, and it always works just fine.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'm going to give some of that stuff a try.
That damn computer science in college did me absolutly no good!
Doug
Doug,
What's going on with that semi-circular opening in the ceiling?
Pete
Thats where the bar is going. The double doorway that you see behond that circular ceiling detail is the entrance to the home theater. And the single door back in the corner goes out to the coolest hot tub/spa area that I've ever seen.
