My brother lives at 9100′ (Pikes Peak) and needs a new gas water heater (tank). Anyone have any recommendations, I have already steered him away from the Whorlpool at the big box store – based on my experiences with their products. Thanks
Additionally, he was trying to explain to me that the drain on the existing water heater has a tee, with one branch as the drain and the other running off somewhere to the house. It sounds like a hot water recircualtor, but he could find no pump, or even a stub out for one, under any of the hot water fixtures. Using the shut-off valve on this line increased the time to get how water to the shower. Could this be a hot water recirculator? I’ve never heard of one without a pump.

While I can't speak for individual brands, there IS someone who can ... the local plumbing supply house.
It seems that the supply houses manage to get better stuff than the box stores ... even when the brands are the same! Sure, the price is higher ... but there's a pretty good chance the guy behind the counter knows what he's selling.
That is xactly what I told him, plumbing supply house.
It's probably a thermo-siphon based re-circulator. If so it should have a check valve, probably with a small hole drilled in the flapper gate, so water can recycle into the bottom of the tank but won't be drawn out of the bottom into the return end of the hot water loop.

Tankie tankless or electric is the preferred water heater at altitude here...
we're all up above that 9600'

"tankie tankless"? what exactly is that? He has natural gas, not LP.
wall mounted water heater... it's the spelling that's not helping...
Paloma is another brand...
bradford white is a good tank style heater...
tell him to go to Rampart and to stay away from ABC....

make that Takagi.. it was the spelling...
keep in mind fuel fired water heaters are not very efficient at all at altitude....
go electric...
but if you must... tankless and point of use water heaters

"Tank you" I passed on info to brother and suggested electric.
have him study his water use habits, even modify them to some "degree" and add a timer to the WH....
but don't get nuts about it... be practicle and he can save money while he is at it...

I thought electricity ran slower at high attitudes. Wouldn't that make up for the difference?

some places up here it doesn't even make it up the mountains...

I went around and around with this recently and the local supply house is your best option. Where I live (Ft Collins) there is R n' R which has been there a long time. If you ask stupid questions they will tell you so. Or argue over plumbing stuff most people could care less about. Great place!
They sell AND support Bradford White.

Yep: it relies on convection currents alone
