high ridge metal roofing

aeetes | Posted in General Discussion on January 7, 2007 09:19am

you may remember my post about my roof blowing off.

i have this high ridge metal roofing. unlike corragated, i can’t find any stuff to put under it for support (those little wavy boards). also, even with a google search, i cant find how to handle the overlap – that is – when do i screw down. with no support under the ridge, i can’t screw down the overlap there as it will bend the metal.

thanks for any input…

any chance of posting a pic of the roofing? it would help a lot.
Even a pencil drawing showing the section view of the profile would help alot.

a little late, but I had to reframe the roof. The -lateral ridge- (??) was totally rotted on the barn. So, my question is how do I attach the metal to the plywood, especially the ridge. I can't find any support like with corrugated that goes under this type of metal. It measures 26 inches wide with the ridges 8 inches apart. Thanks, just in case you're able to respond.

What you have for roofing is meant to be screwed to your decking or purloins thru the flats, not the ridges. There is no profiled board that goes under it for installation. there MAY be a neoprene gasket available from some manufactures that is used to close the eave and ridge against wind driven rain.
I want to say it might be cor-vee or valrib, but I googled each of those and couldn't find a pdf for installation for you.
The two edges are slightly different from one another. One has an extra bend in it and the other will have a very short return bend to flat on it.The one with the short flat return is the covering piece or top piece at the lap. The extra bend is to prevent wicking of water up and over the rib and causing a leak.
At the ridge you can use what you have although it looks from the pic as if what was used may well be a piece of the roofing metal ripped down to a narrower width. I cannot actually tell.
The ridge piece is however fastened thru the ribs of the basic roof sheets using either what I term "stitcher" screw, which fasten the ridge to the metal below (these screw have an aggressive sheet metal thread and are meant to fasten metal to metal) ,or you can get longer grommeted screw and fasten thru the underlying ridges and into the roof deck.
For installation instruction from a manufacturer you may check online at any number of metal roof sites, or head to you local lumber yard and ask for spec sheet on metal roofing. I would bet that if you took a piece of your roofing to a couple of your local yards somebody their would be able to identify the manufacturer.

Great. Thanks for the detailed info. One side of the metal has a longer tab, I guess that what you mean. The ridge is a special piece, though the pic doesn't show it well.I've called around and none of the local yards have the width I have so it may be discontinued. In our area, the big box stores are putting the smaller guys out-of-business. Really too bad.Anyway, I think you gave me enough to do the job.Again, thanks.

The neoprene strip is usually called a closure strip and is often also used under the ridge, reverse profile however.
One other tip.. I lay the metal roof with the over lap piece covering the lower piece in the same direction the prevailing wind blows, just helps ensure no wind driven leaks is all.

thanks on the other tip. don't know if would keep it from blowing off, but at least it can't blow the water underneath it.....i'm going to screw the beejeebers out of the metal. one problem with it blowing off is that it the purlins were not nailed to the rafters.

In that other thread, you describe corrugated, now you say "unlike corrugated...." and what you describe is leaving me befuddled to imagine what kind it is. I've never needed wavy boards to do a metal roof. I think I need pictures too, or a link to a product site.
