Hi All,
This week I need to purchase a Hinge Butt Template. I never know when I’ll need one so one that’s small that will fit in my truck is what I’m after now.
While I’m at it I might as well ask what the “cadillac” of full size pro versions are. I used to have a Porter Cable I think it was and once you got the hang of it it was ok. I’ve used the wood and nails version to good results as well.
I did a quick repair job of a freinds house that was vandalised- 3 doors kicked in. I was ready to buy a template but then found out – no power- so I get to solicite advice ! I had to cut them by hand! The last one went pretty fast<G>

You had to ask didn't you. After you use the Bosch template guide you won't bother with any thing else. 1 hinge or 4. Model #83038. There is a bunch of accessories to go with it. Done a cazillion doors with it and no complaints at all.
I 'm with notrix on this one. Got the bosch setup about two months ago - easy to use , compact case , easy to fine tune also.

It must be late... Notrix asked the question. I replied to it.
oops good night ;) Rik
I like the Templaco. Easy to use almost so easy even I can use it..
Darkworks: No Guns No Butter squilla and the bling bling.

Well just to keep you confused, I like the Porter-Cable, always works for me, course I never used any of the others.

Bosch.
Last time I checked, the Porter Cable case for this kit was about 5 feet long. Dumbest thing I ever saw. I would bet it's history now, because it was steel and PC is plasticizing everything.

For just one or two doors and/or no power, some General butt gauges and a butt mortise plane (Lie-Nielsen has a nice one) makes quick work of it.
I have a rockwell ( same thing as the porter-cable, exact same thing). It works good for me. Yeah, the case may be a little long, but its lean ( little bigger than two 4' level cases).
Has anybody used both the Porter Cable and the Bosch ( Milwaukee used to sell a kit that looked pretty much the same)? What are the advantages that each has over the other?
The hinge-mate looks pretty nice for just a few hinges. Havent been able to justify spending the money on it....I use my rockwell setup little enough as it is.

p.s. check on ebay, Ive seen some setups go pretty cheap.
Bosch used to make 2 different jigs. My boss (15 yrs ago) bought the cheaper one under the Milwaukee name. After an hour of trying to figure it out we got some doors hung but it took a lot of fiddling. Could have been us, neither had ever used a store-bought jig before. I bought the P-C and like it. If your doing a lot of door work, just leave it setup. It is a very robust (heavy) tool and seems to hold its settings.
