I am going to buy one or the other next week. The local prices are PC $460, Bosch $380.(cdn).Nobody has any in stock so I can’t compare to see if the PC is alot more robust than than the Bosch or not. I have about 40 doors to hang, all doug fir stain grade. And likely more in the future .So I think thats enough of an excuse.
I tried a few searches in this forum but prospero seems to think that hinges have somthing to do with buried water lines and doors are just for electrical panels.
Any opinions/advice appreciated , enjoy the long weekend folks,
Thanks Rik

Do they still make the Milwaukee ? It may be less than the Bosch in your area.

I have the Bosch.
It can be set up to do 4 hinges and 7'0" doors. All metal and forgiving. The scales are accurate. Used it for years and thousands of doors latter, zero promblems. Simple and no options needed.
I use a small, slightly larger than a trimmer, 3/4 horse router, much easier. Not much power needed.
The Bosch has got it all over the PC...can't you mail order it with an overnight express?

Dang, send me the moola, I'll send to ya.
40 doors, whatever you get will be earning it's cost<G>

Thanks I think I'll probably go with Bosch ,can't find a milwaukee. Workin on an idea to get a client to subsidize this purchase but it's gonna take a bit of fine tuning yet ; ) Any other comparable brands I should be lookin at ? Rik
NONE!
With only 40 doors to hang, that jig is going to cost you $10 per door. Where I'm from the price to hang a door is around $40. That jig is gonna cost you 1/4 of your profit. I hang about 40 doors a month with the heavy duty Bosch jig.
If I was only going to hang 40 doors I'd make a jig out of a 4"or 5" strip of 3/4" plywood. A plywood jig can easily be used for a couple of hundred doors. Find a door that has already been hinged and make a template that will duplicate those cuts using a 5/8" router bushing and a 1/2" router bit. A standard 3 1/2"hinge with a 1/4" radius is normally set 1 1/8" onto the door and jamb with spacings of 7" from the top 9" to 11" from the bottom and the middle hinge centered between the two.
If I had $400 to burn I'd spend it on couple of a new routers, I've been eyeballing that new Millwakee with the hand grip. A little bit heavy but that micro adjustment is sending shivers down my spine!

I suggest you think about just laying out the hinges and buying a Lie-Nielsen Butt Mortise plane for about 100bucks.
With this handplane there are no test cuts, powercords, router noise etc. Most would be surpised how effective it can be.

wow, forty doors 3 hinges each, thats a lot of hand work!!
I have the Lie-Nielsen, the Bosch jig and a Hinge Mate. Our company has about 8 of the Bosch jigs and 1 Porter Cable. I looked at the Bosch and the PC side by side, used both, and bought the Bosch. No question a better unit. Not to mention that the Porter Cable case that holds the jig is the biggest, longest, most ridiculous thing you've ever seen. As far as the Lie-Nielsen, a fabulous tool that is suited for a door or two, maybe three at a time. 40 ? Forget it. Buy the Bosch. The Hinge Mate is also an effective product for doing custom hinging on doors going into existing jambs where the jambs are already cut. I had the Hinge Mate before the Lie-Nielsen. Ever since I got the Lie, I doubt that I ever used the Hinge Mate again. That hand plane is a pleasure to use. Do you have a planer to do your fitting ? We use PC 126's. Perfect door plane that has gotten damn expensive.

When I bought the Bosch last fall, I was told by the owner that they were not carrying this item any more because most doors were pre-hung. He gave me a nice deal and I was happy. But I was shocked at his statement about no one hanging doors separately any more!!

I got 35 hits "typing hinge" template from a big discussion we had a while ago if you're interested in more opinions.
