Is there a reason why you can't use concealed hinges?

jmc,
It's the weight that's gonna kill you. This kind of thing can be built to act right, but I have never seen a hinge of any kind that will hold the weight of a full bookcase without sagging. We have been successful using castors under the cabinet to give it support.
The last cabinet we did this way on a budget held a big screen TV. They wanted to be able to pivot it out to watch it, but close it back flush with the cabinet when not in use. With the budget we had, we had to use the castor method. We were able to hide a 4" piano hinge behind a pilaster. It's been working fine for about five years now. The client called me last week. She want's to put in a bigger HDTV. I hope she has a bigger cabinet budget for her bigger TV.
With no budget restrictions, we use steel pipe, greased bearings, welded flanges...all things custom made. I can make a hidden wall pivot like butter at the push of a hidden button if you don't care how much it cost.
Good luck,

Axle and wheel bearings from a 20 ton truck. A man in Virginia uses this as the upright, set in concrete at the base and guyed at the top, to swing engines out of trucks with a frame attached to the bearing tubes.
