Hey there…I’m hoping someone can tell me how to calculate the bevel on the top of hip and valley rafters without holding it up and marking it.
It seems like there should be a way to figure on paper.

Set the bevel on the saw to 45degrees.

Calculating a backed hip
H= rise, A=run, C= rafter length (the hypotenuse)
rip angle= sin-1(H/((sqrt2)*C))
"sin-1" is the inverse sin, but I don't know how to type super scripts here. The attached image shows how it should be written.
this also works for finding the rip angle for the corner miters on a hollow tapered column.
Note: in my previous reply with the equation, use the dimensions of a common rafter, not the actual hip rafter.
