I just tried my first hip roof ever. You may have seen my question earlier about joist layout interfering with my rafter layout. Several of you suggested it was ok to offset the jacks if needed. Here in houston we have to put straps over the jacks, so they need to line up. I thought I was doing pretty good until a guy comes by and say that my joist HAVE to lay againt the rafters. How is that possible if you are doing 16oc on joists and 24oc on rafters. MAN! I am worn out trying to get these rafters to fall right. My final layout ended with an extra rafter 4 inches from another one. They are all 24oc but it doent look like you professional roof framers did it. My question is this: Is it ok if the layout isnt perfect. Once I get the decking on it will disappear. Structurally is is fine..it even has three extra rafters.
Please refrain from the “rookie” comments or send out for the “board stretcher”. I am a trim carpenter. I might add though, that I did good on the wall framing.
