Hitachi C10FCE2 10″ non-sliding miter saw?
I realize this is a simple 10″ non-sliding miter saw but i just need a 90 degree chop saw for 2×4 and 2×6.
Local store has it on sale for $149 (CAD).
Any comments on the is saw (keep in mind its price point).
Thanks
John

Well, inevitably you're gonna want to do miters on it at some point, so check out the accuracy/ease of the miter adjustments. Also, flatness of bed and fence, etc, and whether it just "feels" like it'll cut without the board jumping around. (Drag a piece of 2x6 to the store to try. Also maybe a chunk of 4x4.)
I'm just saying that you probably WILL do miters on it -- not fine trim, but maybe some brick mold or some such. You're not looking for surgical accuracy, but you should establish that it can reasonably approximate 45 degrees and that it can be adjusted without 15 minutes of grief.
Some would say that the non-slider should be better for miters because a slide mechanism adds some slop.
I think $149 is a good price. But I've observed that Hitachi has targeted the "Ryobi" end of the market lately, riding on their previous reputation of pro quality tools. Buyer beware.
Like Dan says, check out fit, finish, accuracy, and keep your sales receipt and warranty statement.
Ive got that saw. I refuse to get rid of it. I even have a really expensive Hitachi slider (the older one, not the spaceship) that I bought to replace it, but I just can't let it go. Just like any saw, you will have to square everything up, but my miters are usually dead on, and if they are not, so far it hasn't been the saw's fault. I bought mine reconditioned on the internet for $90 and it might have well been brand new. Do a search.
Hitachi gets alot of flak around here, and I used to get all fired up about it. But you know, I've got alot of their stuff and I know exactly what to expect from it and it does exactly what I want it to every time I reach for it. So if nobody likes them anymore, I just don't care. I've owned that saw for about four years now. by the way.
Thanks for that arcflash.
Shipping & duty/courier brokerage fees are killer here (Canada). $90 would end up costing more than $149 in the store. ("Antique" Delta chops saws go for $50 on craigslist here too.)
I bought the saw today and it seems pretty decent.
Thanks all
John
Hitachi 10" Miter Saw
I've had a Hitachi C10FC for years, great saw but it won't quite cut all the way through a 2 X 6. I'd go for a slider, you'll be cutting miters on rafter ends. If size and weight is a concern, have a look at 8" sliders.
