Hitachi siding nailer

shady | Posted in Tools for Home Building on June 8, 2004 10:26am

Hey folks,

Any thoughts on the Hitachi NV75AG siding/framing nailer for a small time single man operation.  I’d be doing some methodical frameing, wood siding, decking.  It seems like the perfect dual purpose tool for the non-production professional or non-professional producer.  any way.

also my experience is limited to owning one nailer (a senco 41xp finish) so I am not so sure of the benefits/burdens of coil vs. stick nails.

any advice appreciated.

I've got one and feel that it's a great gun.  I use it frequently for siding and exterior trim.  I don't use it for framing, but that's because I've got dedicated framing guns.

Coils are a great choice for a guy like you.  They don't take up much space, and don't necessarily need to remain boxed like stick nails.  This would enable you to store a coil or two of several different sizes and coatings in your vehicle.  In addition, partially used coils are much easier to keep around compared to sticks.

Only thing to note....they will only shoot a nail up to 3".  A hair short for some framing....unless you do alot of toe-nailing.

      diesel,

cool, just what I was lookiing for, thanks.

I was thinking about your note about the nail length.  While that 3-inch nail is a bit short for frameing it would be useful for building up door and window frameing, top plates and any laminating of 2by type frameing, at the expense of end nailing into your studs with a shorter nail.

It might not be so bad in a non earthquake/hurricane area.

I can also talk myself into most anything.

BTW, do you prefer wire or plastic tabs(?) for your coil nails.  Do you find a large difference in price betw stick and coil nails?

I prefer wire collated for framing and other "hidden" work.  But you can't beat the plastic collation for SS fasteners.....decking (although I rarely use nails for decks) and siding.  A little wire "snip" gets caught behind the head of the nail more times than not.  Absolutely bad for decks and bare feet, and not really aesthetically pleasing for face nailed siding either.  For blind nailing siding, the wire isn't bad either.

I'm not sure why, or if it's even common, but I seem to get more jams with wire collated coils vs plastic collated coils.

The plastic collated nails are a bit more expensive vs the wire.  As far as coils vs stick, I can't really recall.   You'd really have to look into that for yourself, unless someone else can speak more definitively here than I have.

hey diesel- think we had this round of discussion 2 months back ,and we both agreed that maintenance was a big part to keepin' the gun running with out jammin'. i said i use wd-40 you used those bostik products cause of the gasket breakdown. anyhow.... been using the bostik stuff and i get even less jams, cause the wd-40 was a build up magnet. the stuff (bostik) is great , and thanks for the heads up. the reason for the jams with wire collated is the spacing, and the tiny spot weld gets built up (you know this i'm sure) . i spray the coil pretty well and it gets pretty good longevity but it still jams and the money i spend on lubricant per box(wire) i 'll get better results with plastic + lubricant sooo thats my deal in my part of the globe. have a safe and great summer..... bear"expectations are premeditated resentments"

I love that gun.  I use it for framing.  I put the Dead On Tools belt hook on the gun and now that is the gun everyone wants to use.  It's light and works just fine for framing

any idea where to buy that hook?

I looked for a few minutes but can't seem to find an online source?

Someone awhile ago passed on a link to http://www.renohardware.com

Here is the link to the  hanger.  http://www.renohardware.net/yzcart/yzcart.php?page=face.php3&NAV=search&PAGE=search&sid=3RPFvlou6W0SVLB&manufacture=Dead%2BOn%2BTools&image.x=42&image.y=9

Hope that helps.  The hanger comes ready for either the NR83A or the NR90AC (or whatever the number is).  To put the hanger on the NV, you have to use the screws the hanger comes with.  Takes about 5 minutes tops.

    Thanks for the advice

I'm going to buy the Hitachi.

Now can you guys suggest a reliable source for coil nails?
