   Joe,
   Had something ssimilart about a month ago where I used blue painters mask on Limestone fireplace surrond to mask it off while I speayed the finish on the mantle and other woodwork. I was also working on other areas of the house so I didn't remove it right away. When I took it off about after three weeks, I had a darker shadow immediately under where the tape was.
   Didn't worry because I assumed that it just lifted surface dust out of the limestone. But when I cleaned up the job after another couple weeks, it wouldn't wash out. I had to scrub it about a dozen times with weak acid wash to make it go away. My theory now is that it denied oxygen to the fresh limestone which was hardening and left the shadow which would have eventually evened out.
   Lesson learned was to be careful about tape and remove it right away.
   It doesn't take much, chemistry wise to mess up stains, glues, and finishes. I feel for you.

   I only lost about an hour and a half making the repair. I just have not seen this before. After I scraped it down I could see where the tear was. What got me was that it was imperceptible while I was working with the rough veneer.I don't know if you'll be able to see it but its where the arrows point to. I was wondering if Greg or Adrian have ever come across this?

   *Joe- looks like you cleaned that up beautifully- I have had to deal with tape residue left on sheet goods, but they never hid from me- havn't seen it in my limited experience with veneer- gb

   *Joe: Isnt that a row of stitches that they use to seam veneers together? I see a row of what looks like evenly spaced stich marks down the seam. I know of a guy in my area that had huge stacks of veneer of various species, that he would stitch together with a machine that glued, stitched and rolled the joint. It was practically invisible when done.

   I believe so, but I have not seen it on the face of a paper backed veneer before. I would think that it would go on the back side and would be covered up by the paper backing. This has happened with un-backed veneer, but you kinda expect that sometimes. The tear that was repaired was invisible except for the residue.

   *That's a new one on me. I usually wipe down anything I'm staining with a compatible solvent and allow it to dry before staining though. Beautiful job on the repair, blends in nicely.
