About 4 years ago I posted a question here about finishing our hearth. Well, I finally digested all the great information, and got it done yesterday.LOL
There’s a 2″ airspace (created by hat channel) between the Hardie Backer and sheetrock. 4 flavors of scrounged slate along with a few resawn Mexican tiles. The walnut came from a big logging operation on Ashlawn, James Monroe’s plantation, outside of Charlottesville, VA. I’ve been air drying about 800′ of it since 1978…I hate to rush into anything<G>
Thanks for the inspiration all!

Looks good, but you're gonna get a lot of smoke in the house unless you add another section of pipe ; )

Is that one of those 'medicinal use' pipe shops?

Who knows, in about 7 years, maybe I'll follow your example. LOL
Hey, what is this in your pipe pic ?
Is that the ghost of Jimi Hendrix on the balcony across the street ?

Ha, I knew I could count on you to drum up some business! I think the reflection is one his old girlfriends, who is obviously still alive and kicking<G> There is nothing--absolutely nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Ernest H. Shepard

900,000bd' of poplar were logged off his place in the 70's. I was building a green wood oak house, and the guy that was milling it, called and asked if I might consider using cedar instead of white oak for the siding...hmmm. When he delivered it, he mentioned the walnut. He was milling some of the Ashlawn lumber, and nobody wanted to mess with anything other than poplar. That was definitely one of my lucky days. Thanks There is nothing--absolutely nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Ernest H. Shepard
Congrats to you then. Have you been able to use most of all you salvaged?

Thanks again, and yeah, I sided my house with 5/4 cedar in random board on boards ranging from 4" to 14", and I still have around 300' of walnut just a waitin', that's a comforting thought<G> There is nothing--absolutely nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
