Homes issue & shelving

jrnbj | Posted in General Discussion on April 20, 2008 12:36pm

DW needs some new shelving to hold the mountains of paperwork that being on the school board entails, so for grins I went on the Atlaseast web site, referred to in the Homes issue as a high end provider of office shelving/desk units. Went to their interactive system building page. 2 50″ standards, $800.00+ dollars. Are you kidding!!!! K & V, hear I come.
Reading the mag is getting like watching This Old House…..pretty nice looking, but not in most peoples budget.

I was there like a whirlwind last weekend three days to move her into assisted living, then home exhausted and try to get things done here again.

That's rough, hope she's in a good place. Sucks to be so far away from parents, at least for me and I'm guessing for you as well.....

I got her in the best place in town.
They have a ladder there with totally independent apartments all the way up to level four nursing care.PT room, all kinds of activities places and a social director and a swimming pool. She loves swimming and that is one place her back has never hurt, so that it a motivation to do her PT and keep getting stronger.Meals they serve are 4-5 star rest quality!

Glad to hear it. My father is in a similar place, after being widowed two years ago. He seems to be having a pretty good time, staying very active.

That's excellent!  I'm surprised they use ladders though, must be tough for them to get from floor to floor....

Yeah, well, price Elfa, the Container Store product.  Only advantage that has, is that the customers can go see that in the stores and see all kinds of cool cmbinations for them to want.  Downside is that they can then harp on your "markup" to install their dream storage solution.

Both systems are sorta "plug-n-play."  What you are buying is how the other components, the desktops, drawers and drawer stacks, the file drawers and the like, are already finished--you just slot (NPI) them in and you are done.

Ok, a competent craftsman can start with nothing but K&V standards and brackets.  But, then you have to cut all the other parts as needed.  Then they all need finishing.  Then, there's final placement.  You are also 'competing' with an outfit that buys high pressure laminate and HDF/HDPB by the railcar too--all to get that 'scandanavian' look of very skinny parts that are also reasonably strong.

Now, why should the standards be so high?  Probably because they are a "stock" standard profile excatly finished to match all the other metal components used.  About even odds, they are dimensionally the same  as a bunch of other peoples' standards out there.  Which likely means that the sell only a tiny number of them, so they have to charge more for every set they sell to break even.

Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

All true, as far as it goes...but at that price I'll be they are doing better than breaking even on the standards...... Bill, gradually losing more of his teeth

Mountains of paper usually work better in filing cabinets.  Check out used office supply places.  Got DW a 4-drawer lateral (can configure for letter or legal) plus shelf w/ tilt up door - 4' wide - for ~$120.  These days lots of choice at those places.

Once a week a PFK (pimply faced kid) who looks like he's to young to drive stops by in a school van, drops off an envelope. It's full of stuff I'm not supposed be reading, plus clippings of any articles concerning the schools, from all the local papers. And it all come pre-punched for a three ring binder. Hence, into the binders, by date, and thence onto shelving. So, I need to make some nice looking shelving.
