I need to replace the pump in my dedicated hot water return line. I have a Watts pump with the built in timer and the crossover valve. Where is the best location to put the pump? Replace the existing pump in the dedicated return line or install it in the hot water line on top of the hot water heater. If I put it in the hot water line do I disconect the return line.

If you disconnect the return line, you've got no where for the hot water to return to.

In the recycle bin.
Waste of energy, they are.
Time and place for everything I say. A recirc pump saves water at the expense of some energy. How much energy depends on how you control it. It's a convenience like many other things. A convenience well justified many times. Much like your automatic setback thermostats ... you could say they are a waste of energy, too. They are a conenience. Best savings is to turn the stat on when you need it and off/down when you don't. Do you have an automatic stat in your house?
