I’d like to buy a sun shade (Coolaroo probably) to shade an A/C compressor and a very hot concrete patio. The shade is a triangle, 16.5 feet per side. I can anchor it to the house on two corners but the third will need to be attached to a pole in the yard. It will be about 10′ high on the patio and angled down slightly to the pole, to direct water away from the house. So, how big a pole (cast iron?) and how deep would I need to bury it (with or without concrete?)? Would it be a good idea to angle the pole slightly away from the house? I imagine I’ll only have it up during the summer months, but we do get some pretty strong winds here from time to time.
Thanks.

You should anchor it to the house continuously.
The size of the pole should be big enough not to bend nor come out of the ground, the force of the wind and water on that big of sail will be pretty huge.
Most permanent (non roll up) covers have ribs added to tension the middle up so water doesn't pool.

some of those are woven to reduce the amt of air they catch. I'm suprised the manufacturer or retailer didn't have the information.
The pole itself can be quite a bit smaller if you use an anchor guyline from it to ground at an angle

Haven't bought it yet so don't know what info will come with it. Guy-wire's a good thought.Thanks.Thon
Coolaroo's website suggests anchoring posts in concrete 16" square by 28" deep. Doesn't mention size of pole.Thon
You should be able to get information from the manufacturer before you buy, either from the sales people or on the internet. I highly recommend that you do, so that you know what you are getting into.A guy wire is something else to trip over, unless its location is somewhere no one ever walks.
