On a day off over the holiday a couple of weeks ago I got curious and went to the DCLU (Design/Const./Land Use) here in Seattle to figure out who (what Remodeling/New construction companies) does how much work where.
I decided to look at the three zip codes near where I live for building permits; this is about a 5 sq. mile area.
The short of it is that I’m still working on the answer; Seattle’s DCLU doesn’t have the information quick to hand so I’m in the middle of pulling it together when I get free time to go downtown during the day, which isn’t too often.
But it makes me wonder: how big is the area that you work in? Are you city or rural? What kind of work do you do?
I’d say that 90% of our projects are in central and North Seattle, about 50 sq. miles (?), mostly residential remodels.

I do 99% of my work in oakland, berkely and occasionally find a small job in san Francisco. My service area is about 400 square miles. 20x20 miles. Longest commute in the last 2 years was about 14 miles. Populating guess of that area would be about 200k. Bay area is pushing 7 million.

*I'm rural, but all of the rural area is around a city of approx. 120,000 (Beaumont). My area covers 7 counties, 28 cities, and a population of about 650,000 people. It sounds bigger than it is. It takes an hour to drive from one end to the other (two hour round trip). I am a little off center of the whole thing. Most of my work is concentrated in 3 counties, and 5 towns. I do repairs and remodeling, specializing in repairs. I get to take apart all the stuff that has rotted or delaminated due to incorrect installation, and redo the whole thing. Almost every small job I get turns into major work. I do a lot of bathroom remodels. Usually start out with rotten floor around tub or toilet. Do lots of siding repairs and replacement too (inlcuding doors and windows).James DuHamel

*I work in Maryland and won't go more then 15 miles one way for work, without a premium on the job now. When I started I'd drive 150 miles some days, glad those days are over.

*All over Chicago. I just follow where there's money to be made. Population: 8 million or so. (I think that includes the 'burbs)I guess I'm still at the point where Geoff was when he was driving 150 miles a day. I usually don't drive that far, but timewise I could probably drive 150 miles on a highway quicker than I can drive eighty blocks on the expressway here.
