How was the tiled counter with under-mount sink constructed for the kitchen shown on the cover of the 2002 Kitchens & Baths Annual Issue? I have thought about this quite a bit since noticing it. The real tricks appear to be: 1) proper support for the sink, 2) adequate support to prevent breaking tiles at the edge of the sink during normal use, 3) effective sealing around the sink (and tile) to avoid water migrating into the counter’s substrate. How have the tiles and sealing held up in use?

I am about to do a undermount stainles sink in a tile counter, and here's what I have in mind. I bought a Franke undermount sink, it has a flat flange. I cut the plywood to match the template (a nice masonite template came with the sink) and will set the sink in the hole first, the run the backer board up to the edge of the waterfall, and then tile over that.
Do it right, or do it twice.
