I need to replace some fake wrought iron supports in a patio with a steel post, probably a 3×3. It will support a 4×4 beam and rest on the edge of a slab, over some steps. I thought about welding some 1/8 plate to the bottom of the post as a flange that could be screwed down, and then I could tile over the flange for a clean look where tile meets post. The problem is having to notch the tiles around the post and having to use small strips of tile on the edge of the slab. Is there a way to attach a close-fitting steel post cleanly after tile is installed?
