How good is Leafproof

trades1 | Posted in General Discussion on October 13, 2009 11:35am

Has anyone tried the Leafproof gutter protection system?  In Northern Illinois  it’s sold by Raintree.  The cost seems high, about $1900 for four simple straight runs on a gable house and garage (about 130′)

It's similar to several other brands. It'll keep the leaves out, but it'll likely keep some of the water out as well.

This is the only stuff I've found that works well and doesn't look bad:

I've got no dog in the fight. I sell and install these locally after trying many brands/design.

BTW, I just got in my order for them in about 3 weeks ago.
And last week I saw that Costco had them for $8(8?) for 32 ft worth, which is what I needed. And I think that was deliverd. But they only have then in 5" K, but that is what I needed. And then last week end I was a ad for 3 hardware stores that had them for 12.99 a section, normally 16.99..

Just spent $16.60 (tax included) on a leaf guard product at Menard's to keep neighbor's overreaching leaves (Catalpa) out of my detached garage gutters. Just 3 foot plastic sections with holes in them and that slide under the shingle and then snap onto the outside gutter lip. I held the ladder for DW while she installed them (her idea in the first place). Less than an hour, including clearing the gutter beforehand. Good, since football was on afterward. I don't know if they'll work, but it's a pretty cheap experiment.

I've used the plastic sections similar to what you describe, only the more recent ones I've gotten have a fine screen on top, so that maple seeds don't get caught in the holes in the plastic. The stuff seems to work well with or without the screen, though, and the price is right.

I think part of gutter guards working depends on where you live and what is getting into them. In my area we have to deal with lots of snow and very cold temperatures. Gutters are a block of ice during the winter. I also have seeds from soft maples and ash trees. Seems like they will slip through the smallest holes and grow anywhere. Nothing I've tried works, between the fine debris and the ice, one of the two ruins the guards. Keeping leaves out is easy, it's the other stuff that causes problems.

Other issues deal with the slope of the roof, where and how the gutters are attached. Some hangers interfere with guards that clip into the the front recess in the gutters. A cap that is installed in line with the roofing requires the gutters to be in the proper line. Depending on the style of the hangers, your drip edge and facia construction, this can be difficult. Another issue is cleaning out debris that may get past the guards. It may not be easy if you have to remove portions of the guards to get to the gutter. $1900 for 130'? Maybe if it includes installation of gutters and guards on a very difficult site.
