While the question of how early a remodeling project should start offers a narrow range of possibilities, the answer to the question about how late it should end seems to be a lot more unclear. If you start at 8:00 AM, ending at 4:30 PM with a ½ hour for lunch gives you an 8 hour day. It also ends the day before most people start making dinner, perhaps even before most people get back from work.<!—-><!—-> <!—->

What if your customers don’t care how late you work? What is the latest time you find you’re able to end work without upsetting the neighbors? If no neighbor is ever expected to complain if work begins after 8:00 AM, what time should work end to ensure no neighbor ever could be expected to complain? <!—-><!—->

No later than 5:00.
Actually, only found out about an ordinance in our town requiring construction work be halted by 6:00 PM when working on my own home a bit later than usual.

We're working in a occupied house and we are starting at 7:00am and finish at 5:30pm, 10 hr days, the people do not seam to care one bit.
Been in other houses that we couldnt start in until 8 and usually were able to go until 5 or 5:30.
It all depends on the home owner.

But we are from Iowa, people expect people working all hours.
We used to have the combines running past our house well after midnight.
When the crop is ready they have to go.
When it is hot we start roofs at 6 AM and I have never had anybody complain. granted I try to keep it kind of quiet until 7 AM.
I don't think people get upset around here until you start working past 10 PM.
I try to work 7am to 5:30 pm. But when I was younger and working on my own house I would work until the sun went down.
In our town the shifts run 24 hrs a day, so you might see the bar really busy at 7AM with the guys having their "Friday Night". I'm not one of them .

Last winter we worked for a family member of the owner to Kinze manufacturing, you know, those blue grain wagons and planters.
Kinze told us that he was grading the lot until 9:30pm one evening and one of the neighbors came by to tell him to "Please" stop for the night, they couldn't get any rest with that damn diesel(Cat) running! He said that he knew he was in the city cause nobody out in the country would complain about something like that, after all this is Iowa!
I dont see many problems with the time we spend in other peoples homes, heck, they want us to get done more then we do!

That's the Iowa I know.

It all depends on what you are doing. Today I left home at 8 AM and was done the job about 1:30. After expenses I cleared just short of $600.00. went shopping at the warehouse club and took a nap all before 4 in the afternoon. I haven't worked past 3:30 in the afternoon in years and have no plans on going back.
dang sledge,
I don't know if I should hate you or just cry.
Peach full,easy feelin'.
What's your secret?
IE, what's your profession?
Window repairs.
Pesonal best was 16 windows at $50per in a little under 2 hours with $85 in parts. They were replacement windows that the manufacturer couldn't figure out the correct size balancers.
Nice.
My brother in law install replacement windows sometimes. Says he makes good money at it. I wonder if it's as good as you're doing.
Repairs have been very good to me. Seems everyone wants to swap a window out but few are willing to repair it. Granted some are too far gone to invest a dime into but in most cases I can bring a window back to its best day, at a fraction of the cost of replacement. I'm sure you have seen those big fixed windows the builders put over front doors.... You don't even want to know what switching out the glass in one of those costs.... and it's easy work that scares most. After the first 100 you can make it look easy.
It has taken me at least 10 years to figure out most of the problems but everyday is a learning experience. My Brother calls me the window MacGyver, but just when I think I have seen it all.... I realize I'm sadly mistaken.
Your name is deceiving...I'm gonna have some questions for you....
when i get going on a job, sometimes I hate to stop, so.....sometimes dawn to dusk. I have even rigged lighting to continue after dark. On interior work, have worked as late as 1:00 or 2:00 AM, then take the next day off. These are usually my own spec projects though, not customers homes.
I worked until 2am on a job once to assemble a kitchen so the countertop guys could template the next day. They didn't show. I wasn't happy.
sledgehammer,
when i am working alone-that's about what I shoot for myself.

I try to let families do their "morning thing" in peace. Especially if they have kids to get off to school.
Gotta be working by 8 though--not usually negotiable.
Quitting time??? All bets are off. Unless specifically requested, it's when I say.
In remodeling, I frequently have to reconnect plumbing and electricity before I haul azz. Drying-in of a certain area can also be a concern. Might be baby-sitting concrete.
One never knows.
The best reward for a job well done is the opportunity to do another.
worked late tonight ... was there till 6pm.
last year ... I finished grouting a shower at 9pm. On a Friday.
they were thrilled.
I had plans for the weekend. So it'd would have been a Monday finish.
about midday ... I saw that if I worked slow and steady ...
I could actually wrap everything up that day instead of going into the next week.
ran out for lunch and bought dinner snacks ... and worked it thru.
I prefer to work 8 to 4. btw ... my "8" includes lunch. I try to work like normal people with real jobs ... like my wife and everyone in her office. And I'll take an hour for lunch if I like too ... dammit.
but ... now that I take the boy to kindergarden most mornings ... I now let everyone know I can't commit to starting till 9am. Some jobs close to home ... might make it by 8:30 ... but I'm 9 to 5 now.
I try to stick to that when I sub ... but sometime subbing ... and always when I work my own jobs with my own customers ... I quote / charge "daily". Not hourly.
and sometimes a "day" is 6 hrs ... and sometimes it's 10.
and sometimes I get more done in those 6 than on those 10's.
I see no problem doing noisy work up till 7pm if need be. Most neighbors won't complain about that .... depends on the HO's.

Try to explain that to someone who doesn't do this and they'll never understand being "in the zone".
Wife wants me to take off for spring break with the kids - I think I said I would ( I say alot of stuff) - Then she said she did a search, and Pittsburg looked intersting, I thought" cool, keep the kids entertained - I'll be w/ Jeff. Just Joking - but if we come that way, we're hookin' up.Remodeling Contractor just on the other side of the Glass City
