I just checked out the ” OTHER ” photo gallery a bit .

Hardly any comments on most all the projects .

Doesn’t seem to generate the interest the photo threads here do  .

Anyone getting any feedback from posting over there ??

Yeah, this is Breaktime where we like hangin' out, talking construction, shootin' the bull. MUCH better than some hoity-toity 'gallery'.

      Duane ,

I have no interest in posting there  -- just wondered how many had and what was the response .

I saw a deck by Piffin over there , but not many that I knew .

seems like it's an alter ego for this place kinda.  Don't recognize the names I see over there.  You'd think if they're going to post their pictures there, theyd'd be here hanging with the rest of us, unless of course they're using their real names there for the advertising.

        Walter,

I checked it out. OK but not like the Photo Gallery.

No feedback, Q&A's, like the forum. I hope this thing gets sorted out.

If I remeber the first thread about it, it had MINIMUM sized picts that were LARGER than some here could post , esp. w/ satellite connection..page expires and other timeout problems.

I think it all is connected with the latest problems in some fashion.

I come here, I don't want to open all sorts of new pages, or log in info, or anythin more troublesome than I already do..I'm lazy and tired after working. I like simple, and not into "expanding" my internet horizons, I shy away from that stupid Facebook for the same reason..just too much junk to wade thru.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

"Thought I might win something"I entered the box contest over at knots not expecting (or deserving, for that matter) to win the contest, and I didn't - but taunton sure missed a chance when every entry didn't receive a 'certificate of merit' or some such low/no cost acknowledgment to the 300+ individuals that made the effort to compose, post, and expose themselves in front of their peers - 'positive reinforcement' - seems to be a concept lacking in the management of the online content - (arbitrarily) close, delete, ban, and purge 'bad' behaviour, then put limits on photo posting that comprises the best feature of the forum - and wonder why it's a zoo - "there's enough for everyone"

OK, so the Project Gallery isn’t for everyone. . .I hear that. But, let me shed a little light on its purpose. It’s for YOU. It’s meant to give our readers and visitors to the site somewhere to highlight their work, to put their work under the noses of their peers and our editors (a gallery entry made the cover of the latest Houses issue, for example). It’s a photo gallery, so sure, there isn’t the level of how-to information you’d get in the magazine. However, posters to the gallery are gracious and eager to share; if you have a question about how something in a photo was done, all you have to do is ask. Most posters check back, especially when his or her project is featured on the home page, and many also post follow-ups adding information. No, it’s not the Breaktime forum, but it’s a valuable, knowledgeable community just the same. If you find it lacking or anemic, I suggest you add something to it. Post your work. If you find it cold or lacking in interaction, interact. Ask a question. Comment on someone’s work. Get the conversation started. There’s some feedback here I can really put to work, so I’m grateful for the thread. Thanks. Robyn

      1. DavidxDoud | Jun 08, 2009 08:51pm | #37

I will offer a comment on the galleries - I have posted to the knots gallery, and have spent a bit of time perusing the projects at that site -

one major issue I have is the picture quality - for the gallery post I uploaded ~500kb pictures that showed detail - but I might have well have posted 20kb picts for the resolution that I can access - there are tremendous projects posted there, and I have to imagine the details - if there was a way to click on the picts and have it open up full size, the gallery would hold more interest to me -

I perused the FHB gallery and find the same issue - how to? I think not - I can only guess at the details -

the backwards posting with the newest comment at the top makes discussion difficult, and as a poster, I have to check back to see if anyone has a question or if anyone has answered a question - not likely to happen, especially after a day or two - if interaction isn't intuitive and convenient the gallery will never be more than an empty hallway with fuzzy pictures hanging in it -

I'd encourage you to get the photo limits lifted here (at least in the photo gallery tab) and to care about and nurture the photo gallery - the threads here are reminiscent of what we used to find in the magazine - what built the taunton empire - FHB was birthed in a housing recession, and it prospered, but not by being superficial -- I'd suggest that the taunton brain trust consider how the online magazine could use some of the photo gallery threads - there's a dozen in the 'recent 50' that are a class above and more interesting than all but a handful of the taunton 'blogs' -

        sincerely

        David Doud"there's enough for everyone"

"If you find it lacking or anemic, I suggest you add something to it. Post your work. If you find it cold or lacking in interaction, interact. Ask a question. Comment on someone’s work. Get the conversation started."The point being made is that it is designed and operates in such a way as to be three times as hard to do all that in that location. Far easier and more fluent here in the photo gallery at BT.Specifically - over there it take 3-4 times as long for a page to load - at least. Too much other photos and superfluous info and webbie noise. That is after you log in which also takes longer also for same reasons I assumeAnd the list of comments reads upside down. one has top scroll to bottom and then read up.Here they read naturally from top to bottom instead of chinese-like, AND the comments I have already seen don't force me to keep waiting while they download again! This is not to pick on you personally but a hope that explaining WHY that site is hard to use might make it to the right ears so it can be made useable.

<<But, let me shed a little light on its purpose. It’s for YOU.>>No, it isn't. It's the desk-jockeys' idea of what they think we need. We've consistently, co-operatively, and repeatedly expressed what WE want, while you and Taunton continue to insist we aren't holding up our end of the bargain bec we don't like playing the board games that the honchos think we should enjoy more. If Taunton dies a slow death, it'll be bec we were told to wait for the paramedics while ten people were ready to jump in and administer CPR.While we're at it, could you reassure Gunner that i didn't collude with you to get him bounced? He thinks i have special powers as a former housewife.

<<Doesn't he know you are still married to your house?>>I should file for divorce...this place already cost me half of everything i've made!Life just got simpler, though: i was just down to the Food Bank to get the old, sprouted potatoes for the Community Gardens. I saw all this tofu, soy yogurt, even goat cheese left at the end of the day, ready to be tossed to the pigs and they were only too happy for anyone to take it. I found out the Good Food Store in Missoula gives them almost a half-ton of food every week, but none of the down-and-out patrons wants any of that unsliced bread or that furrin tzatziki or hummus.I may just screw this gardening business and hang out on Monday in the pre-pig line.

let me shed a little light on its purpose. It’s for YOU.

You're trying.  We get it.  And some of us appreciate it.  Just keep working on it - when you hit the right combination of factors, it'll take off.  Ebay started by selling Pez collectibles - look at it now.  And look at facebook, myspace, etc.

Right now, Breaktime has a better cultural milieu, or whatever you want to call it, and its more productive for most of us to spend our time here.  In spite of the flame wars, polijive, etc, etc. (I for the most part try to avoid that stuff, and stay on topic with construction, or at least try to keep my humor and badinage out of the war zone!)

I don't read the magazine.  Don't have time, and most of what I read doesn't really have any direct benefit, and doesn't have the immediacy and personality I've become accustomed to here on BT.  Plus, my wife is a bookseller.  My house is a freakin' book zone, with barely enough room to walk between the piles.  Like I need a magazine every month.  I quit Remodeler, and it was free!

I tried posting over at the other projects forum.  Some of my projects got no response/feedback whatsoever! - but the same projects got very rewarding response/feedback here at BT.

I wrote Charles Miller in that venue back in December to ask how he got 10 pics in his shed dormer post - still awaiting a response.  In January I wrote ZS Design Architect if he had any photos to go with his cool drawing.  Still awaiting a response.  That wouldn't happen at BT.

5 small pictures.  It just isn't enough to tell a story.  I tried breaking one project down into numerous sub-projects, but it lost continuity, and became tedious.  People would see the sub-project out of context, and not get it.

Some of the pictures of projects are very pretty over there.  But I'm a craftsman/tradesman - pretty pictures don't interest me anywhere near as much as real jobsite pictures, warts and messy backgrounds and all.

I learn a lot here.  More probably than I could measure, but I'm sure as much as I learned at any union schooling or shop class.  And I pay my dues - I contribute as much as I can, anytime I can.  I share any knowledge I have, and take my lumps when others disagree.  But I don't hold back.  I get a lot here, so like a lot of the folks here, I try to give as much back.

Yeah, I wish the venom spewers would lighten up or take it elsewhere, but sometimes they make me laugh, entertain me.  I know you'd like a kinder, gentler BT, and I would too, but its a rough and tumble world out there!

If it was up to me, I'd just ban the worst offenders, with a note like "that was a hilarious post - you are a riot.  Not appropriate for this venue, so you're out of here, but thanks for the laugh."  You can't change people.  Its your site, keep the people who play by your rules, ban the ones that don't.  But don't stress out wishing people would change and play nicer, it just won't happen.

That's my 2 cents worth.  Deduct it from my next book purchase!

        Robin,

As for the other forum  -- each time I try to look over there it bumps me off line .

Even from page to page it knocks me off and I have to reconnect -- not exactly easy for me to use .

As you probably know I'm a frequent poster in the BT photo gallery . I enjoy taking pictures of the projects that I'm working on and like sharing with the owner and folks here .

Mike , Huck , Chuck , Fat Roman , Seeyou and lots of others also post very interesting photo threads that are well received by many here . The sharing of tips and tricks is priceless in my mind , along with the banter and fellowship .

I hope there's a way to get back some picture posting capabilities here for the sake of our tight knit community .

Seems you folks could find a way to link the picture threads here over to your other gallery  -- or are we too risque to be put out there ??

I appreciate your time spent helping to make this place run ,

        Sincerely ,   Walter

          Robin,

Walter, theslateman, mentioned an accomplished group of posters. I am humbled to be on Walter's list. There are many others.

I hope others chime in to add posters that I may have forgotten. I have been a BT'er since '99 under various user names. Due to moves and crashes, my profile shows me as a 2006 member.

Some of my favorite 'How to' Posters, including Walter, and those he mentioned are:

At first I made accusations that it might be one of two people. Splintergroupie being one of them. I doubt now that it was her. I don't know if it was anyone complaining.

I'm inclined to think that it was the same problem as the big sweep. Non regular mods making uninformed decisions and leaving the regular mods putting up with the hate of the aftermath.

In the end it's just words on the Internet.

Yeah. It also showed me that the regular mods aren't that bad. I think the "Bad Moderating" is coming from people that don't know the flow of the place. They come in from corporate and make guest appearances based on whatever. With no prior information on the poster or anything.

I've been here since the fall of 99, never had a warning or a stern word with a mod.  I post a picture of myself kicking back having a good time on Sunday. It gets in the hands of some necktie wearing goof and he/she decides I'm the problem with the tavern. (It had been there for a week.)

It's cool. Taught me what's what.

I was thinking about that, and I think you are right.

But I noticed in the U-Tube vid you linked, you let the F-Bomb drop, maybe THAT was what they caught?  I mean, Dino in a Speedo was more of an assault then your little noodle.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

No it wasn't the youtube vid. It was the noodle with the I'm Huge caption. We cater to housewives, and political midgets now. That's Tauntons target audience in the tavern. You can't forget that.

I put up a few photos over there, quite some time ago, 2 yrs.? Never heard anything and no one else has posted any ahead of mine, that I've seen. Haven't been back, probably won't. I waist enough time just lurking here once in a while, no time or interest for anyplace else. I like the format here. You can buzz through anything of interest on coffee break and there is daily activity. The other place is dead.

I agree  -- this format was hard to beat .

Just look at all the names that look in here daily or whenever .

been there once.way back when the mods posted on here for everyone to start putting some pics up there.

For me, that is even more of a resource hog than a photo thread here is, plus it takes forever to log in. just not worth my trouble to frequent. I look if there is a special reason is all.

Besides, they never fixed the thing where the thread reads backasswards. JP was going to look into that, then he disappeared from Taunton.
