How old is Breaktime?

SYSOP | Posted in General Discussion on July 5, 2006 10:00am

So who out there can say for sure, without a doubt, how long breaktime has been around? By my calculations we are in the 9th year! Let me know what you think.

Another question: This going to be the 6th or 7th Breaktime fest?

Just curious really -Mark

There was a thread in the tavern recently where this was discussed to some degree.

I'm thinking I signed up somewhere around 1996 in the pre WebX days. I don't kow how long it had been around before that.

But when I signed up, it was already thriving and had a reputation for being a good source of construction info.

When I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you. [Chuck Norris]

Pretty sure BT began after Knots, and I was loggin on to that in '95.  Maybe even '94.

Couldn't have been any earlier than 96 that is when taunton.com came into existence. That was why I am asking because we know Taunton.com turns 10 this year we where wondering if Breaktime was also.

I want hard solid evidence so that in 90 years we can celebrate the centennial of Breaktime... :)

That's part of the history I am looking for. I am hoping that some of the "old timers" can fill in some of the blanks. The other cool thing would be to get some of the original posters back to reveal some of this history. To bad we don't have the oldest threads... The archives only go back as far as 1999.

          9. junkhound | Jul 05, 2006 11:28pm | #16

how did the word get out

In my case, wrote a letter to FHB editor in the late '90s asking a question, answer was to ask the question on 'breaktime', which is how I found it.  No column in FHB on BT then yet.

BTW, never did get a good answer to the question on chemical reactions for etching on interior of insulated glass windows, lotta BS though <G> .

No help here from me as I came one in the spring of 98 and by accounts that looks like around 1/12 years after the fact there abouts . Good luck . Ive asked the question my self several times and read the question a lot more.

The only ones Im thinking about now that I know that are still alive and in another forum is Big Ed from Dallas and Sony. The rest that I know that are left are pretty well here . I dont know about Fred and I dont know anyone who does. AJ should be somewhere, lol. You should have their records.

Actually I work for Taunton Interactive, which is the group that supports all things web. The problem is that in the very early days we "hosted" the forums here at Taunton with some form of home grown system but the folks that created that are long gone. I have "only" been with the web team for 5 1/2 years so Breaktime was here when I got involved. I am just trying to figure out who was here in the very beginning and if they know when that was. What it looks like is that it has been around since the spring of 1997. Unless someone can tell me otherwise that is the date I am going with. Which means that next year is the 10th anniversary.

But Brian and Justin are going and I know Justin is doing his best to raid the FH closet. I was just to the right of Piffin, out of the pic and computer illiterate (computers: known as knots in a rope back then, knots were equal spaced and 2 cubits apart. My cave was 10 knots x 22 knots x 6 knots H).

  6. woodguy99 | Jul 07, 2006 04:53am | #42

I've been here since 1998, Adirondack Jack, Blue Eyed Devil, Mike Smith, Ed GACC and Sonny Lycos were some of the big names then if I recall correctly.  Piffin joined shortly after that and since then has outposted me about 20 to 1.

By rough approximation I might average an hour here a day.  Over the last 8 years that is about 3000 hours.  Holy cow I need to get a life!  Just kidding, I've learned plenty here to justify the time spent.  Maybe one of these days I'll even make it to a fest.

    Mike Maines

    1. Lansdown | Jul 07, 2006 05:03am | #43

Based on those numbers Piffin has spent 60,000 hours here. Wow.

I'm sure it was earlier than June '97 (but I may be wrong)....I thought I came on in '96....i know for sure Pete Draganic and Blue were here, and there was a history....I'm pretty sure that there had already been at least one server crash with a lot of stuff wiped out. I know when I came on there was an archive that went back a ways to search.

What's the running count on Fests? I was #2, after Pete.Cabinetmaker/college woodworking instructor. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

      You forgot Joe Fusco.

I'm sure I forgot lots of guys.  Joe Fusco and Ken Drake had lots of cool discussions on roofing that were way over my head.

There was the infamous Larry...and the precursor to Larry, whose name I forget...maybe Richard?

Splintergroupie was around a lot more back then it seemed.

Every time the board changes or a Regular breaks free it seems like things will never be the same, but eventually it always comes back to feeling like home.

I'm late to this thread, but...

    In issue 120 (Dec. '98/Jan. '99), page 6:

"Since the beginning, Fine Homebuilding has been one long conversation....Over the past year that same conversation has evolved on-line through "Breadtime," the discussion group on our Web site (finehomebuilding.com)."

How many Fests? Depends on how you count them.

    PeteFest, 2000

    CaperFest, 2001

    TexFest, 2002

    QuakeFest, 2003

    RhodeFest, 2004

    RiverFest, 2005

But there was also ReckoFest, WolvieFest, HoosierFest and probably one or two others....

In terms of the annual Fest, I count it as six. TipiFest is seven. Your mileage may vary.
