I guess you'll have to call it "new," since we didn't make a category for the conception to birth stage. Ruth DobsevageTaunton New Media

And how do you protect yourself if you don't want the mortgage payments just yet?

Does what position you frame in affect the outcome?

You're opening a whole can of worms here."The child is grown / The dream is gone / And I have become / Comfortably numb "      lyrics by Roger Waters

Does what position you frame in affect the outcome

Does that matter?  IE: stick framing in some rafters, shouldn't you do that laying on your back in order to drive the nails in along the highest plane of resistance?

one detail among many is our front door. its 2" think and pretty ornately hand carved. if I'm sitting on the front porch its not often that passerbiers don't complement it.

Does it count if your home has wheels ?

I can peacefully choose, to peacefully do, that which I do not want to do.

I can also peacefully choose, to peacefully not do what I really do want to do.

Not sure of what this info is being collected for, but I think, for this croud that there should be a catigory of "new - 5 years" based on the fact that a lot of builder types, build new, move in, live in it, build new, move in, live in it, build...  And of coarse, I know a few who's houses that are prepetually under construction... :-)

        Whoa, everyone.

It's just a poll -- the results won't be reported to the IRS, NSA, NFL, Homeland Security, or anywhere else. We've been putting them up on our other forums (Cooks Talk and Over the Fence) for a while now. They're for our general information and for your general amusement and discussion.

The little icon is the Florida ballot box, chad and all.

The mallet next to my name tells you I'm a woodsplitter and a venerable Tauntonite. I'm the editorial ghost in the new media machine. In past lives I've been copy editor for Fine Woodworking and Fine Homebuilding, and I've also edited Taunton books. I generally post the polls, but I don't necessarily dream them up.

And my house, by the way, is off the charts -- parts of it date to the late 1700s.

I thought it was interesting that roughly 1/3 of our houses were in the 50 to 100 year old range.

You'd think a bunch of contractors and such would have newer homes, wouldn't ya ???I am becoming increasingly worried that there isn't enough anxiety in my life

            Unless they're "remodeling contractors" ..

like i told the wife ...

her chances at living in a brand new home went to zero the second she married me!

            I remodel ....

New home are for "beginners" ...

Are you nuts? We all know that the new housing being built is garbage. That's why most of us live in houses built before we started building.

'Course, I built my own house. 'Course, I'm pretty darn stupid.

Al, Ruth has been here...no offense, Ruth...but Al, she's been here forever. She's one of the good guys...er...gals.

Remodeling probably accounts for a lot of that.  A majority (53%) are 50 years and up.  Here in the older parts of LA, you pretty much have to remodel whatever is on the land because of the setback requirements now.  Lose 15' on both sides of a 50' lot, and you don't end up with much house.

Okay, the polls are my idea. Well, not originally, but I'm responsible (or not) for scheduling the content for the FHB web site. When Ruth told me that we have the ability to run polls, I jumped at the chance... what better way to spark some interesting discussions, get to know who's reading FHB, who's visiting our website, what they like and don't like, trends in home building,... you get the idea.

So the polls are on our home page and linked to a discussion on BT. They'll change every few weeks, cover a range of topics, maybe even make the magazine once in a while. But without input I'll run out of (good) ideas, so I welcome your help. If there is anything you'd like to see polled, drop me a note, and I'll do what I can to get it online.

            Cheers,

            Brian P.

My house is 4 days older than my son.  So it will be 4 years old on Feb 25th.  Something else happened the week the concrete was poured and suddenly I only had 9 months to finish the house.  And I did.  With plenty of time, a whole 100 hours, left over.

    Ruth,

That poll is pretty cool. Did you write the scripts? How do you place it in a post?

I don't understand! I cut it twice and it's still too short!
