How should I insulate a mobile home attic space?
Yes, I know most of you would remove the mobile home and break ground, and I’ve considered that.. BUT, taxes are so low for mobile homes in my county, its hard not to want to take advantage of a space that’s OK for only me and my GF.. Plus the mobile home is already there, so practically free..
The problem is the cost of utilities.. The wind blows out here 24/7 , so infiltration is a problem.. Propane is the only gas available so I planned on installing a hybrid heat pump with propane as secondary fuel, but lets talk about the mobile home.. I plan on removing the particle board sub flooring and replacing it with plywood.. But before I do, I want to remove all the ductwork, insulate with cellulose and plan on a upflow furnace supplying exposed spiral ductwork in the peak of the cathedral ceiling.. Ugly, but efficient.. This also eliminates many of the sub-floor penetrations and points of infiltration. New self adhering house wrap, windows etc etc.. But how about the attic space which I cannot access from below? The 2×2 roof trusses have a 3:12 pitch with no eaves, so I plan on adding a sleeper to each truss side to gain insulation depth and a overhang to protect windows and add shade.. Even with new overhung 2×4 sleepers installed over the existing trusses, I only have 7″ of insulation space over the wall plate.. Naturally the attic space increases toward the center of the room. Considering I only have 7″ of space over the plate after I remove the old roof deck, should I consider building Larsen truss to gain more insulation space, or consider spray foam as much as I dislike it? The problem with spray foam is it needs to be applied from above and I’m worried it will rain while trying to schedule the spray foam to the roofers schedule.. I would have to DIY in sections..
So just throwing this out there.. Does anyone have any recommendations for the attic insulation and sleepers? Or to any parts of my plan?
Thanks!
