What did you use behind the drywall on that cove for backing? I see the screws are closely spaced. I think I'll get to do a cove like that in the house I'm working on. Do you have any pictures of the framing?
Tim; the frame is just dimension lumber with purlins 6" on center because the elipses are tight. I did not shoot any snaps of the frame
Thanks Brisketbean. I'll make sure and post some pictures if I get to frame the cove. Then you can tell me what to do differently :-)
I remember some of the vaults that you posted in the old Breaktime Forum. They looked great, and so does this one.
It appears that more than one radius is involved. Is that correct, or am I seeing it wrong? Do you have any other photos of the groin vault from another angle? If so, please post them.
Also, it looks like you may have used 1/2" OSB for the ellipses at the intersections. True?
Post more photos of some of your other vaults if you still have them. Many of us would like to see them. I'll be posting some myself, soon, if the weather cooperates and the owners stop changing the plans.
Good to see you posting here.

Dang! I didn't know you could do that with drywall...looks great...did you wet it down and put it over a form to dry?
Jen
Very empressive, never seen 1/2" board bent so tight. They sell 1/4" flex drywall now..two layers...for the average person...obviously you don't need it!!
I use the 1/4 inch for tight bends, but I can bend somewhat tighter than a 35" radius with 1/2, how tight, I don't know for sure yet.
how tight, we are bending 1/2" to radius as tight as 24"
I apologize if I'm asking an old question, but what exactly are you doing to get 1/2" bent to a 24" radius?
Plenty of water, I imagine, but there's gotta be more to it than that. Unless it's a trade secret, I'd be very grateful to know...
thanks,
k
p.s.: Mr. Brisketbean, that's really nice work. The question stands for you too, of course.
its very little water, but i have an apparatus that will make that bend in about 5 minutes, it is patent pending
wow, not that's some nice work there!
Can I ask, how long does it take to do something like that? Just the drywall part, also the crotch vault. Inquiring minds want to know. =)

ted it takes me 3 or 4 hours to frame a simple groin vault like that one, and a couple of hours to bend and hang the rock. I frame them with metal now instead of wood, they are easier with metal and come out more symetrical. john
