I’m looking to put together (at my wife’s request) a modest cedar lattice setup for the back of our house – she wants to use it for vines like clamytis (sp?). Our siding is brick, and I’m wondering what the best way is to attach the lattice to the house. I don’t want to put the entire structure directly onto the brick (to allow air/water to circulate), preferring to hold the it away from the stucture a bit. Does it make sense to construct small cedar blocks – say made from 1×2’s, attach those to the house and attache the lattice to them? If so, about how many would I need for, say, an 8×8 structure?
Sorry for the simple question, but I’ve never done this type of work before and want to get it right before sticking lots of holes in the side of the house.

Mike, I would build a 2x2 frame of either pressure treated or cedar for the 8x8 area. Let the frame - possibly three or four uprights - set on the ground. You can set the frame any reasonable distance away from the house. The frame cross piece at the top could then be anchored to the brick siding using a piece of steel strapping. A 1 inch x 1/8 in. piece with a tab bent over at the end could be anchored to the brick using either plastic shields or concrete (tapcon) screws. Two straps should hold but if the lattice will carry other plants (or possibly kids or cats) then maybe three straps.
Steel strap is available galvanized at most lumberyards or hardware stores.
*You may regret drilling, tapping, or otherwise penetrating your brick wall at some later date. Mostly, aesthetics. In the past, I simply avoided this by driving a couple of long rebar into the ground adjacent and parrallel to the wall. Tie these to the wall at the top of rebar only. What are we talking, two, 3 holes? Drill into the mortar, not the brick. Set your screws in epoxy. This avoids having to deal with spacing, drilling a bunch of holes, etc
