I’ve a lot of home remodeling experience. I’ve added rooms onto a house, done lots of inspector approved wiring, done plumbing, taken bathrooms down to the studs and rebuilt them. I’ve done roofing, framing, cabinets, and all types of finish work. I read Fine Homebuilding cover to cover every month. So, my son wants me to build him a house.
I’ve all the skills to be a good general contractor and can do a lot of the work. Can you recommend a good book to help me work out all the logistics to keep the project moving smoothly?
Thank you,
Wayne in Columbia, MO

Go to the FineHomebuilding bookstore and have a look.
Anything by Larry Haun.

And the one safety tip I was given 50 yrs ago:
NEVER BACK UP!

I second the Larry Haun recommendation from calvin and would also add anything by John Carroll. Specifically The Complete Illustrated Guide to Building a House. Also continuing to reach out to the FHB community at large with questions.
Best of luck

Wayne-
Sounds like you are looking for help on how to manage the whole process of building a house, not so much on how to do the physical work, is that correct?
If yes to above you might consider this book -
"Production Checklist for Builders and Superintendents"
Also "Markup and Profit" by Michael Stone........That book saved me from going bankrupt.
And "Running A Successful Construction Company" by David Gerstel
Jud, you hit the nail on the head. I'll get the book you recommended. Thank you.

Calvin, I have several of Larry Haun's books. I agree they are valuable. His video when he jumps up on the framed wall and starts marking for trusses while warning you to watch your step is hilarious.

I’d bet Larry might have only backed up once.
Best of luck.
Year and a half nights and weekends with a lot of help. Worked Union so early end of days in the summer. You’ll have a blast! Feed your help.
I recommend watching the Esential Craftsman videos. Lots of wisdom and technical advice, explained by an experienced builder. By the way , I just finished building my personal house last June. I found these videos very helpful.
