how to connect old wallpaper and new drywall patch
Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can transition between several layers of old wallpaper and a new drywall patch over a door that was removed? I’ve been advised against just running the joint compound onto and over the old wallpaper. Could I use a setting type compound? The clients don’t want to strip the old paper off the three rooms were there are these large patches so I need some way to even out the transition between the two surfaces. Stick new wallpaper over the patch, perhaps? thanks for any help.

If that wall paper is stuck real good............
and you have applied a sealer to that paper, I would give a patch a try. If it doesn't life the wallpaper you should be ok with feathering out. Of course, you're idea of using a setting compound like Durabond (not Easysand) where the drying is more chemical and quicker, is a good one.
If the paper is sealed with latex paint I'd use something in oil or one of the Bins or Zinser-Sheildz.
Just as Cal said,
Bin any of the wallpaper that you might be feathering over, then patch away.
With using Bin, I have had no trouble with using premixed drywall compounds, although the setting types will get you done with a patch job that much faster.
