how to darken grout for 1-inch hex tile

Hi,
I’ve seen grout stains that you paint on with a brush or applicator. As you can imagine, that’s just not practical with 1 inch hex tile. It would take forever! Does anybody have any ideas on something I could apply, similar to the way you would apply a grout sealer, that would darken the grout but not stain the white hex tile?
The tile contractor used a light grey grout and I really wanted a dark grey, almost black grout to go with the vintage style hex tile.
thanks!

If the tile is glazed then a stain should "bounce off". Of course, if the grout has been sealed the stain may bounce off that too.
happy?
these ceramic hex tiles are not glazed. I have not yet sealed the grout. I know if i spilled grease on the grout it would darken nicely and do nothing to the tile. Seems like there might be some kind of old trick to darken the grout...I just dont know what it is.
My kids can have white grout near black in their bathrooms in only days.
They rent out very cheaply, just need fed often : )
Not glazed? I suspect that the tile is glazed, but I have been wrong before. Glazing is not necessarily a glossy surface.
I would try a test with a "paint on" stain with a few scrap tiles or back in the corner of a closet, or pull the toilet and test there.
I suspect that the stain will readily wipe off of the tile face while remaining in/on the grout.

Never underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
If this is American Olean tile, they are not glazed per se, but are pretty much impervious to any liquid including stain.I would avoid a dark grout--it will show every imperfection. Go with a neutral grout slightly lighter than the tile itself, so for the white hex tile, pick an ivory or white--no darker than beige. If your tile is truly black, then yes, go with a grey.
