How to find cross bracing behind drywall
I did a major fubar and contribute it to four brain surgeries as it’s not only a good excuse, it’s a good reason as well?. We had the upstairs of the shop insulated and drywall hung. I forgot to mark the areas where the angled bracing for the studs that help to hold up the roof trusses were so I could have the guy who installed the insulation not cover the areas so I could access the large areas of usable space for storage. I think those angled braces are referred to as LIB bracing but my ignorance is vast.
The finished area is like having a bonus room above a garage if that helps. Does anyone know how I can find them? I know how to find studs, but not the angled pieces of 1 x 4’s…
Thanks so much!

As far as I know, there is no hard and fast rule as to where they go. Use a wire or nail to probe.
Metal or wood Let In Bracing?
Wood. The layers from the inside of the room to the desired space is the drywall, the fiberglass insulation between studs (24” oc) the material that’s used in place of plastic (forgot what it’s called, can’t see through it) and then the cross libs. If I could find one area without the LIB, I could get behind it and measure where to cut the access ports.
There is a similar set up already in the bonus room above the garage. Could I measure that area and try to avoid Murphy’s Law? Just for clarification - we just purchased the house and there were a lot of different trades going on at the same time in repairing/replacing things that was needed as the house sat empty for almost ten years.
Take a look at this past article .

Thanks so much! It’s a huge help in deciding where to cut everything and be able to access all that unused space.
You’re welcome!
While there’s a bunch of knowledge on this board, remember that there are volumes buried in the mags.
