Would appreciate some tips on installing 18″ natural limestone tiles. The tiles are about 5/8″ thick. The subfloor is 3/4″ CDX, over 2×12’s, 16″ o.c.. I would like to go with a backerboard (Wonderboard, Hardibacker), but the guys at the store say to use a dry mortar bed. I’ve never done a mortar bed before, so I’d prefer to go with a backerboard. Is that OK? Which one is best for this? In reading Michael Byrne’s tiling book, I don’t see any problem with using backerboards for stone, but maybe I missed something. Thanks in advance.

Hi Leon,
How big an area is the floor that you want to cover?
In most applications, backerboard would work well, BUT it does depend on the application and size of the room.

Gabe,
This will in an entryway/hallway area, about 5 feet by 10 feet. Also, which brand of backerboard would you recommend? Thanks.

Hi Leon,
For such a small area it doesn't matter. Kind of a large tile for a 5 ft. hallway thought. I use a 5/8 cement board but even an additional layer of 3/4 ply glued and screwed down would be fine in your case.
