How to lay stones on a front porch?
Hi,
I have a how-to question that I am having the dickens of a time finding a complete answer to. I have a concrete front step that’s 7 foot 4 X 4 feet. I’d like to put a layer of stone on top to replace the large loose concrete slabs that are currently there. What’s the best way to lay the stones? One very brief description said to use an isolation membrane between the concrete and the thinset, the home depot guy said no. Do I need to seal the concrete or make score lines?
Thanks!
Lisa

If the concrete slab is cracked you have to do something to keep the crack from telegraphing threw. All depends had bad the slab is but I would at the least set at least 1/2" cement board in a mud base on all surfaces you plan on covering. Tape and mud seams just like you would for ceramic tile. And then set your stone, silicone treat it after curing.
Hi,
Thanks, Other than icky green paint and one small spall, the slab is in great shape, I just want to make it more attractive. Is thinset okay, or should I do concrete?

That's a good question, I would use a thin set mortar. Also I would prep the poarch, clean with TSP and maybe power wash it. Don't know what shape it's in but the mortar must have a good solid, clean surface the bond to. There was a post here about a sealer for brick walk ways. It sounded like good stuff, don't know what climite your in but protect it from the freeze. Water gets in the cracks and freezes it will damage all your hard work. It's name was Agra something????
