Can you explain your question a bit more, I'm having trouble knowing what you wish to do..
thanks
Skilsaw (wormdrive).
oh...
Don't they sell precut common rafters at Lowes?
so.........
It is only how to cut a rafter to fit on the wall and up against the ridge?
I had no idea. It sounded more nebulous than that.
Explaining it would be difficult-but pointing to most any carpentry book would be my suggestion. Long ago the US Govt. had some publications (what dept. I'm not sure anymore) that explained most construction matters pretty darn good. And rafter cutting's been around a long time. Stepping it off would probably be the easiest and a reminder to remember the Height Above Plate.
Don't overcut the birds mouth.
And cut off half the thickness of the ridge.
Does that cover it?
MeasureJim, Measure.
I think you may have misunderstood the Q
. He was asking how to measure,
I have found a ball of twine stretched tight from top of ridge ( long point of plumb cut) to the outer corner of the bearing wall or beam (bottom of rafter at seat and heel intersection) to work well.
This gives me a lighter devic than welding a bunch of saws together, which could get a bit cumbersome when transfering to the rafter stock.
Jim
Well, sure, the TITLE was about measuring. But then (s)he asked a question about cutting.
Yeah, sure, you betcha, a bunch of skilsaws welded together would be too cumbersome. You're right about that. Yeah, man, I didn't mean anyone should do that. Yeah, wow...wait...what you COULD maybe do is tie the cord from one saw to the bevel scale of...naw, that still seems like a lot of work. No, you're right. You got me there. Plus, welding magnesium might be tough, yeah...
Hey. You don't happen to be a Broncos fan do you? Man, that would be the double whammy, huh? That along with F*rd owner?
More of a wagon jumper than a fan
Though these last few years I have logged quite a few miles on thta wagon. I can even name a few of th players.
I just may have that FORD painted up in the Blue and Orange, with a dead Seahawk somewhere, sooon!
Oh How I miss our little talks.
