how to use vinyl flooring without transition strips to carpet?

I have seen vinyl installed in a kitchen and the kitchen floor area runs out into an open floor plan which is carpeted. In this case there was no transition strip (no metal strip). The vinyl seems to have been rolled over the edge of an underlayment so that hte carpet butts into the clean vinyl edge which because of the underlayment is higher than the subfloor under the carpet. A very clean transition and no trip hazard.
Anyone know the details as to how to roll this edge of the vinyl, best choice of underlayment for this purpose, is it difficult to bend and glue the edge, anything else to think about???????????

DISCLAIMER... I am in no way shape or form a sheet flooring guy. I think I have only had it installed on 2 of my jobs in the last 16 years or so. I have seen vinyl sheet flooring (marmoleum actually) in a kitchen transition to carpet however without the metal strip to terminate the sheet. I would assume the sheet was cut flush to the underlay, glued down well, and then the carpet tucked and rolled at that edge. For this to work well the underlayment edge at the transition to the subfloor/carpet would need to be laser straight. I don't think the sheet would ever get wrapped around to the underside of the underlayment but I most certainly could be wrong. Let's see what others think...
Looking at mine, the vinyl somehow rounds the edge of the underlayment, and then the carpet butts up to that edge. Had never looked at it before, but if you push the carpet knap back with your fingers you can see the vinyl rounding the underlayment on a tight radius. I don't recall the brand of the vinyl, but it's tough, heavy stuff -- not the cloth-like stuff you sometimes see. But the carpet and vinyl were installed at the same time by the same pro crew, so they knew what they were doing.
That makes sense about being done at the same time Dan. I could see adding a 1/4 round to the end of the underlay and welding the vinyl to that profile, then running the carpet to that edge. I bet that is a nice look. I agree with DoRight that if the metal termination strip can be avoided that is the way to go.
The radius I'm seeing on the vinyl edge is only 1/16" or so.

Yes, i have seen it with only a slight round over.... 1/16 or perhaps a 1/8 inch. I figure you could easily fle over the edge of the underlayment before putting it down and do it in 30 seconds each sheet with a rasp. It is the gluing that round over that seems like would be the trouble spot. I would like to do this myself. It is not really that important as I am only talking about doing it for a closet or two. (I am going to put down vinyl in a furance/ utility room so need a transition at teh door threashold) . So I suppose I could try it and if it comes loose through a metal strip over it later.
