How well do the cedar cousins get along?
A question for those with experience using red and white cedar shingles. I am building a garden shed that is very visible and a focal point to several vistas. I want to side with shingles as a decorative element and am considering alternating courses between red and white to achieve a horizontal striping. I plan on using a bleaching oil finish.
My concern is that the tannins in the red cedar may leach and end up streaking the white. Does anyone have experience with the two next to each other? Does the red cedar behave?

Nothing definitive, but...
Can't promise you anythng but what I've observed. A guy in town does decorative shingling, he mixes the two (as well as other species) on walls. I've never seen any problems. The oldest installation I've seen has to be over 15 years old.
Just in case...
...you want to incorporate a few other ideas, check out the article I linked to below by Mike. I remember way back in the day, when this forum was a forum, there were a few stunning threads on shingle design. A coupe fo guys did some absolutnely amazing work.
