Hi,
I found this photo in a Sunset magazine and would love to have the hood built for my kitchen island. Do you folks think it’s copper or plain rusted steel trimmed in brass? Which trade would I contact to have the shell built?
I’m not sure exactly how to link to the photo so I’m trying two ways here. Hope it works.
Thanks.
Linda

K.C. ...a good REPUTABLE heating contractor can do it for you.A few years back I had one similar to this installed on a project that I was doing. We already had the hood (factory made)with the blower ,lighting etc but needed a longer shaft to reach the cathedral ceiling. The h.v.a.c. guy came out and took the hood and measurements back to their fab shop and built the system All I had to do was cut the hole in the roof and flash/shingle after they were through with install. One word of caution, the manufacturer might not warrant their product if the blower has to push farther than the specs. call for. An inline booster type fan may need to be installed.Your h.v a.c. guy should be able to answer this question for you. good luck ...J.H.
*Thanks Jerry, Does this look like a light copper sheet metal that can be welded or bent like the HVAC guys do? Or what kind of metal do you think it is? I plan on purchasing a Viking hood with a roof mount fan (they are supposedly very powerful and will be strong enough for the distance I need). I thought the Viking hood could be the guts for the new hood. I wondered if the metal might be thicker than sheet metal but I couldn't tell. I have no idea. Thanks. Linda
*Linda,I don't think this is copper. I think it's steel, but hard to say for sure. You could get this made of copper. If you can't find a competent heating contractor that can make this (and make it look good) you might try a sculptor or art welder--they are good at creating things and make nice joints if you can "spec" it out for them since they don't know much about airflow and other trade considerations, in general...
*KC, I'm with Mad Dog, I get the feeling it's steel with a special finish, but it could be copper. I had a sheet metal contractor weld this one in copper. He also supplied the verdigris finish, which we tried on scraps until the clients liked the look. Broan makes hood inserts for custom fans--no need to tear apart another fan unless you really want to.
*Mike,Your hood is beautiful. Are you close to KC at all?Linda
*Thanks MD and Linda. Is KC Kansas City? I'm in Boston now, moving to Maine soon. The hood was done for a house on Nantucket Island, Mass. I can't take much credit for it, I just drew out the shape, found a shop that could make it, and let the owners pick the finish. Interesting project though. (I also build the cherry cabinets.)BTW Linda, upon looking again at the hood you posted I noticed a heavy weld at the flue. If made of copper it would probably be a smaller soldered joint. Looks like steel, maybe etched with an acid? Or rusted as you said.
