i need to make this 8.5†cap with 5/4 red wood & i was thinking of splitting it up as the drawing shows… would you put it on one part at a time or would you build up the lower two pcs. with a filler and put it on as an assembly ? total footage is 40 some feet with two 90deg. joints. all most $200 in the redwood!
just doing some “over thinking†while i try to sleep after a day of way too much coffee.

I'd put on the two 'middle' pieces first (the beveled pieces under the top cap), then add everything else. Use some spacer blocks as you install to keep everything consistent... so your reveals don't wander. You sure $200 will cover that?
I'd install it one piece at a time, put the filler in the middle, add my two side pieces and cap it off.
Same as david said.

That's why sketchup is so cool - you can figure out how you're going to build something without wasting any material. Looks like you've got it covered.
good eye! yeah i love sketchup. i have been using autocad & viz for years and for a while was teaching the programs for a autodesk reseller. now that i use CAD as a "tool" to make more money, i have switched to a mac and given up on autodesk.
I hear ya - it's easy to get addicted to. I can't resist posting this model - I put it together to help understand just how it was going to get built.
You could make that up easily in your shop or on the job site.
I would assemble it by attaching the bottom pieces to the top cap from underneath with whatever fastener you want, plus the appropriate glue. Think ahead and be careful with fasteners in places you might be cutting so you don't hit one.
This way, there will be no nails(whatever) showing other than whatever you do to attach it to the building. That appears as though it could be done with glue and minimal nailing, also.
