How Would you Mount & Trim This Exterior Door
Hello,
I am putting in a crawlspace exterior door.
I decided to go with a larger 36in door for this rough opening since it was available. The previous 32 in door had extra wood trim jamb extenders that had rotted.
The jamb rough opening 0f 39.5 inch’s is nearly the same as the width of the brick mold of 40 inches that that the brick mold does not rest on the sheathing. I am planning to add pressure treated one by on either side of the door fastened to the existing jamb. I would add J channel back and drip cap on top.
Two questions:
1) Any issue with this approach?
2) What trim or sealing is recommended along the brick on both sides? Was thinking of backer rod, caulk and backfill with spray foam, but don’t like to be dependent on chalk.
Appreciate the comments.
Thanks,
Steve

Getting brick molding to fit exactly right in masonry openings is tricky. If the mound to brick gap is too big I’ve carefully taken the brick mould off, bought a 4’ top piece and reinstalled the two sides with a larger reveal and cut a new head piece to fit. This could possibly get you an extra inch or so. I’ve also added another piece of trim around the outside edge to the brick mould so it’s wider.
Also when you fir the jamb sometimes you can use a piece of pressure treated fence board that is around 1/2” on both sides instead of a 2x4 on one side that bumps the door too far to one side.
I wish door manufacturers gave you the brick mould outer dimensions for doors.
I found a wider PVC brick mold at a local lumber yard that I am going to check out. 1-13/16″ X 3-1/4″ With slightly different profile. This should give more surface for door brick mold to overlap brick and the sheathing. I’ll cut back the siding to make room and install new J.
