I am looking for clarification for when to operate an HRV using the Humidistat control vs. the Boost control. Also, does the boost control need to operate with the prior in the off position? The contractor who installed the unit could not help and clearly was not qualified to do so.
Thank you in advance.

Humidistat control is there to turn on or off an HRV at a base level during the heating season when humidity can build up from breathing, houseplants, and other sources.
The boost control is to get ahead of humidity, when you take a long shower, or otherwise add more water vapor to the inside of the house. Boost would refer to a higher fan speed and more moist air moving out of the house.
the interactions between an on/off setting on the humidistat control and boost controllers will depend on the specific HRV and controls used.
You should be able to do a little experimentation to verify if the boost control operation is impacted by humidistat settings.
If you have a lack of confidence in the technician, you may want to find another one to come, or become knowledgeable in the ins and out of air balancing of your HRV. there are undesirable outcomes from excess positive or negative pressure the HRV can generate.
The manufacturer of the HRV and controls should be able to get you installation information and answer specific questions you cannot find in published documentation.
Thank you for the detailed answer. I have reached out to another HVAC contractor to take a look into the installation and help clarify proper operation and balancing. It is a Honeywell unit, their support is very minimal and defer to a contractor.
I see that Honeywell marketing directs you to professionals for help.
If you are interested, you may be able to find Honeywell Home installation instructions on internet vendor sites.

Thanks again. I have the manual and have gone through it. There are a few questions that I will ask the tech when he stops by. Will repost what he says about the installation.
