Hi All
Our contractor will be installing an HRV system in our new home. My wife wants a stink fan in the bathroom and and outside exhaust fan over the gas stove.
Our contractor says she does not need one , and that the fans would “imbalance” the system.
Can the HRV system be balanced to take into account externally vented exhaust fans??

Your contractor is wrong and your wife is right an HRV is no substitute of a range hood or bath fan. It won't hurt the HRV to have these things in the house. How come he doesn't know this????

Your wife is half right. The separate range hood exhaust fan is certainly required, since a range hood should never be connected to an HRV. (The grease will gum up the HRV core.) However, properly installed HRVs always draw their exhaust air from bathrooms, and usually include a high-speed manual override switch for high-smell situations calling for more oomph than the background exhaust provided by the HRV. There is no need for a separately ducted exhaust fan in a bathroom in a house equipped with a properly installed HRV.
