I have recently bought a 1950 bungalow in Alberta, Canada. Since the beginning of November I have noticed that pipes seem to be humming at different times of the day. The humming is not directly related to running water and has only happened since the weather has turned colder. The pipes will hum after water has been run, in the middle of the night or when the furnace kicks on. Any ideas?

Galvanized water pipe hum because they don’t know the words.
Ok I know that was a bad one.
Do you have a water softener? A softener cycling could be the cause of the noise.
Also check to make sure any toilets are shutting COMPLETELY off when they are done filling. I see so many that let just a tiny trickle run constantly which will create a noise and transfer through the system at various times.

Sometimes its the toilet. The flapper has a slow leak and then the tank has to refill itself. A loose valve in the float fill will vibrate as it slowly closes off.
Hey Thanks,
That is a possibility as the toilet downstairs does have a leak! We shall look into it.
Thanks Again.
Back in the mid 1980's a number of people in the Sausalito area of California were complaining about an odd humming noise. It turned out to be from a type of toadfish in the S.F. Bay. The humming was a mating call of the male toadfish.
So maybe a bunch of horney fish have found there way into your water line...
