I recently moved two old Hunter ceiling fans (the heavy ones) for a customer. Until the addition was complete, the fans were stored in the basement, on crates.
Now the problem, one was stored as it hangs. The other was inverted in it’s crate. The one that was inverted, leaked out some oil over the course of its bat like rest.
Anybody know what kind/ how much lube to use to refill?
and/or if this will be a future problem?

I've seen these tubes of oil for Hunter fans. I don't believe they hold much oil in the fan.

it doesn't matter how much oil you put in ,the spinning blades will whip the excess around the room ... no really , just use the dipstick........oh man I'm too funny huh?
I didn't know that Hunters needed a lube job !
The motors are just shaded pole type, I think ?
not much to them really ,,some felt around the bearing ends Why do you think it needs oil?
use a light weight (10w) oil - tranny fluid is fine - the fan holds more than you think - there is a hole in the upper casting which is the spot to use a squirt can to install the oil - do it on the bench and fill it up till it starts running out (take the cover plate off the bottom) -
there is a bearing in the bottom (if you need to disassemble, the threads are left handed) and a bushing in the top and the shaft has spiral flutings to lift the oil up to the bushing -
good fans, treat them well -
they REALLY need oil?"
Sir,
The best oil to use is the Hunter oil, but the next best is either Three in One in the BLUE can(electric motor oil) or a Zoom Spout oiler. I wouldn't use anything else in my fans because the oil may stay in the fan for a LONG time. Many Hunter originals have been damaged by improper or insufficient oil. Oh yeah, wait until the fan is hung before replacing the oil, I use a pipe cleaner to check the oil level. I think that the oil should be about an inch below the edge of the oil reservior.
Tom Who has about 25 fans, ceiling and otherwise.
thanks Tom,
I never really gave it a thought !
sometimes I installed the fans, and sometimes the HO did that after they moved in.
if the fan had power, I was done.I have never put oil in my Hunters, and the oldest one is about 11 years now

these are the 50 pound originals we are talking about - yes they need oil - there is a lower bearing that runs in the oil bath that carries the weight of the armature - i top off the reservoir once a year, vacuum the the unit, clean the blades - they'll run quietly for years and years -
"there's enough for everyone"
