Hurricane Clips For TJI/AJS Rafters
I framed a low pitched roof with AJS [TJI] stock and was wondering if they need hurricane clips over the top plate at the outer wall? I live in Ma but only thought they were for trusses placed greater thak 16″oc. I am using 11 7/8 AJS and 2X8 ceiling joists for an 18’span.

Normally, here in MA, the only time the inspectors look for hurricane clips is if your rafters are not connected to both the top plate and the ceiling joists. So if you're framing a cathedral where the wall ties are above the plates... you need 'em. Or if your layout for your joists are 16" oc, and your rafters are at 24" oc, you need 'em on the rafters that don't have a joist next to them.
That was about as clear as mud, huh?
around here we have huricane straps on everything from rafter to fdn.
yeah, we're a dieing breed. I think there are only somewhere around 10 states left that have their own state building code... we're one of 'em in MA.
Same here in Jersey for now. Nothing Hurricane/Tornado/Earthquake straps anywhere on a house yet except for Hurricane Ties for Cathedral ceilings. I talkied to an Architect a couple weeks ago and he said that it's going to change soon because they already started doing it down the shore areas.Once I see a blueprint with all theses hurricane ties/shearwall straps/special bolts ........etc then I'll start scrathing my head. Once this happens I guess we'll have to get about $50,000 more per house....;-)Joe Carola
