Except for stand-alone surge protectors for consumer electronics, the only surge protectors that I know about are for the whole house and they are installed directly to the main panel.
There are sensitive circuit boards in almost every consumer product now so its a good idea to install a surge protector. I live in an urban area and I know of a couple of people who've lost TVs and even a furnace after an electrical storm. Refrigerator boards can also be damaged.
I installed one on the panel and have had to reset it on one occasion. I often hear the one for my AV system "click" when the protection is activated.
