Okay, Guys– It has been a while since I’ve sought wisdom here, but I turn to you as a last resort. I’ve been trying to make up my mind about a good finishing system. I know next to nothing about spray systems and have zero experience with them, but I do just enough cabinet work, furniture, and finishing (painting, poly, etc.) in the midst of renovations for clients, that I wonder if an HVLP system would pay for itself and give me better results. I’d like a versatile set-up so have been considering 4-stage units–primarily looking at the Graco 4900, but are there better ones? What guns are easiest to clean? What clear finishes are easiest to use? Help!! I realize this is better suited to Fine Woodworking, but I haven’t gotten much conclusive info there.

Do a search on here, this topic has been discussed plenty.
All I can offer is the unit that I own and like very much, the AT3500. Its a three stage but has the power to spray latex. I use it mainly to spray water based poly and once in a while shellac. Works great with no complaints.
Another thing worth mentioning, tech support is great, you actually talk to a person in MN, not some guy named Steve in India!

The best thing for you to do is join the forum over at Homestead Finishing, read some posts and threads over there, then call up the owner, Jeff Jewitt, for a one-on-one consultation.
Jeff is the author of some excellent how-to books on all aspects of fine finishing, most all published by Taunton.
He handles all the good pro lines of gear, specializes in HVLP, and sells turbine powered rigs and compressor driven guns. Plus, he has all the finishes.
For a specialty like this, get outa here, and get over there!
