You mean space on your hard drive? Or is there a limit here at BT to how many photos a person can post?
If the later, there are workarounds, like start a page at picasa or one of the other web photo places that give open access to th epublic at your request, and then just link the insert in your post.
or we could petition the moderators to open your restriction to sky's the limit, given that you are such an asset here.
If the former, you could get a removeable hard drive that is larger than what is in your PC and move the files to it.

It won't allow me to either. I have a whole bunch of picts of this job I've been on for the last 6 months and it showed on a pie-graph how much space I've taken up. Photographers are being interviewed to take picts of this job for a spread they're planning in Architectural Digest. I thought it might be nice to post here.
Funny, I haven't posted a fraction of photos that some here have. I dunno. Am fading anyways. I threw my renewal subscription of FH the mag into the trash yesterday. While I load photos on prospero once in a while, I usually host my photos on third-party sites like picasa, photobucket, shutterfly, etc. I actually have several accounts on each for differing categories of photos, work, family, kids stuff, etc. It's easy to track them.
Then I just link here using embedded HTML. An added bonus is adding a size command so the photo isn't so large it needs to be scrolled left/right/up/down.
I prefer it that way, it gives me more control over my photos. I can kill them when wanted or needed, or swap out a better shot for an existing if desired.
Just add <IMG SRC="" width=500> to the body of your post, insert the photo's URL between the quotation marks, and click the "check here if HTML tags..." box before you post.
The "width=500" will make the photo 500 pixels wide. You can change that to 400, 600, whatever. By just defining width OR height the photo will always stay in proportion.
"Just add <IMG SRC="" width=500> to the body of your post"That will work, but you're better off resizing the image first and then calling it with the HTML tag. Resizing on the fly like that tends to cause a loss of clarity in the image, sort of like how clown suits don't stay wrinkle-free when 12 of them are squished into a VW.I think that you are also still waiting for the full image file size, too, so just because you've reformatted a 2mb photo to 300px by 250px, you're still having to load a 2mb photo in the browser.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb
View Image
Correct, they still need to be resized to smaller files prior to linking to a post. That's a simple step included in the process when you upload to the 3rd-party photo hosting sites. The "width" specification does not alter the physical file size in any way shape or form. It only controls the display size when viewed on a monitor.
Right. I didn't want any of those dialuppers griping in case there was a rash of 3mb thumbnail sized photos popping up :)'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

And this thread presents a reason completely separate from those who are on dialup... For making the pics you post, a smaller file size.Smaller file size means you do not get to the 'limit' as quickly. And pics can be made smaller filesize, without making them smaller in screen size, or so lossy that they are worthless....Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy..You are always welcome at Quittintime
I use flickr.com to store my photos. Its free (up to a point, and then the charge is minimal after that). It automatically resizes, giving you a variety of sizes and formats to choose from. They require you to link to their site if you post a photo - but flickr automatically gives you the html needed to post your pics online, with a built-in link. Just right-click-copy, then paste here, after you click on "Source".

once the photo is in flickr, click the picture you want. Then, above the picture, click "all sizes". Medium or small works best for BT posting. Scroll down, and below the picture you'll see "To link to this photo on other websites you can either:1. Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage:" Below that is the html, just copy and paste in in BT (in the "source" mode), and the picture will show up in your post.

Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
from the site:
How many photos and videos can I upload for free?
When you have a free Flickr account, you can upload 2 videos and 100MB worth of photos each calendar month.
While the 100MB bandwidth limit for photos is firm, we do allow a little leeway for video in case you encounter transcoding errors, sound sync weirdness, etc. You will be able to delete and upload a new video. Please note, that if we determine you’re abusing your free video upload privileges, we may block your ability to share video.
Your upload limits are reset to zero at midnight in Pacific Time Zone (Flickr headquarters time) on the first of each calendar month. You can't recover any of your monthly allowance by deleting photos. If you have a free account, you'll see your limit on the upload page.
If you find yourself hitting your limit, try a pro account. Or, you can shoot your photos at a lower resolution or resize them to be more "web-friendly" (like 300KB instead of 5MB).
------------
Oh, and BTW. When you edit a second time, go ahead and delete the previous "edited by" footnote. That way you only have one at any time! (personal pet peeve)View Image"...everone needs to sit on a rock, listen to the surf, and feel the ocean breeze in their face once in awhile."

I have shutterfly, picasa, and photobucket accounts, all free.I use photobucket the most, I have four separate photobucket accounts. Photobucket lets you store 1GB worth of photos (4000 photos at 250mb each) and gives you 25GB a month of bandwidth for each account. All of the sites have bulk uploaders, which allows you upload a folder's worth of photos with one click. When you upload them, they have an auto-resizer as well. The beauty of the third-party sites is that you upload the photo once, then you can link to it from several forums. You can even link a photo loaded on breaktime to a post on another forum. The sites take a few minutes to get used to, but heck, once you get the hang of them they're simple to use.
And make sure the downloaded photos to the site aren't mistakenly deleted or the link will be broken and the dreaded redx will appear.
And if anything were to ever happen to the photo sites it will affect your pics on BT.

Not sure.I'm on a mac, so safari versus ie or firefox might yield different results.I do think that when I used ie you could cut and paste. With firefox I had fewer editing capabilities available in the posting box. I had to use some HTML. With safari if I try to copy and paste a photo, it says it copies, but it only pastes the url address, not the photo itself. So then I manually add the <IMG SRC=""> and click the "HTML included box" to get the pic to post.Ah, technology. What a timesaver, eh? With all these advances shouldn't we be down to a 12 hour work week by now?

If the "full size" picture is 5 MEGBYTES, then even when you "resize on-the-fly" to a tiny 100 pixels wide the file download is still the same S-L-O-W.It's best (and more polite - aka "netiquette") to make the original file size (not dimensions) a small download. You can get a decent looking 640x480 picture that is well under 100K in size.
Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari?
Exactly. You need to control the size in two ways, the file size for faster downloads, and the physical size for scrolling.I used to resize everything with Irfanview, now I let photobucket do it.Some photos I post I want to be large for better viewing of a certain detail. For others they can be any generic size.
intresting that all 3 of those show as the same file size (rt click and then properties) Wonder if that makes a difference on the dl or not when they're resized.
I think I just answered my own Q. When I copy from your post and paste into PS they all show with the exact same sized image, 1023x680 so all the data is there so the time to DL should not be affected my the smaller image, since it's the same data just displayed differently.
I'm curious - No one commented on the thumbnailed pic. I was wondering if that would cover the best of both worlds - Small pics for those on dialup, and bigger ones could be opened by anyone that wantred to see detail.
Oops. My brain just hit a bad sector.

What that means is that the picture continues to reside on Picassa's web site, but it gets autmatically embedded here.

Thank you Mr. Hood
I've finally decided on how I'll post my pictures in the Photo Gallery until the pie chart is no longer with us .
Start by getting the pics from camera to computer .
Resize in a batch with Picasa 3
Put them into a Shutterfly album -- takes a lot less time to upload if they are already resized .
When posting a thread just go to Shutterfly and copy and paste to the thread .
I tried Flickr and photobucket , but in the end I went back to Shutterfly where I already have 65 albums hosted for free .
You are very welcome, your continued efforts to share your wonderful photo essays are appreciated. This device may make your camera uploads go even more smoothly.

Make sure that your Picasa Web is set up for public access, otherwise the link works only those whom you have specifically allowed on your Picasa web page and most BT'ers won't see your pics. BruceT
I'm only going to use Picasa for batch resizing prior to uploading to Shutterfly -- then simply copy / paste the picture directly into the post .

This is a highlight/copy/paste from SmugMug.com. I can do the same with flickr, but their rules say it has to link back to their site, so I follow the rules. Not sure what SmugMug's rules are.

I assume that Safari on a Mac leaves you as high and dry here as Firefox, as far as an editing window. So what you'll want to do is enter some HTML code to make your picture show up, and you can do this anywhere in the text that you'd like.Very simple, too. Just put the following code in your post and make sure to check the box below that says 'Check here if HTML tags are in the message':<p><img src="imagenamehere.jpg">The <p> tag tells the browser to start a new paragraph line. You'll also want to use that in front of any text, and not just in front of the image. Otherwise your text will all bunch up.The only other thing you need to do is replace imagenamehere with the actual URL of your image, including the http:// part. That's it. Right. Once you check the box, it's going to ignore the commands like the return key.
You probably want to resize your Picassa shots so that they are 500-600 pixels wide. That seems to be a good size for posting here.
Here's what you need to do on the images. View the Picassa page with the image in question, then right click on the image and select 'Copy Image Location', then paste that between the " " marks in the code I mentioned before. And it should appear like so:

I remember seeing Stan's OP, but I don't lurk in the Photo Gallery much, so I didn't follow it.I've done an AS on embedding pics several times, which was more what I was interested in, but you can easily spend days searching and trying various techniques, and I tended to give up after a half-hour of experimenting.I did end up spending some time in this thread, but no way have I read half of the posts. I'll definitely browse it some more, though.I've been copying and pasting stuff that might help into a new doc on my desktop so that I've got it for future reference, without all of the other side conversations that occur. What with scanning old prints to disc, wrestling with re-sizing, and figuring out how to embed, I've got most of the last two days invested. So the Old Dog has learned a few New Tricks, but at a pretty steep price.AitchKay
iphoto gives me three size options for exporting: Faster Upload, which is what I chose for that Picasa Gallery; Better Quality; or Actual Size.Since Picasa won't let me resize, what other resize methods are there?AitchKay
AitchKay,
Here's a copy and paste from a past thread about how to do embedded photos without all the HTML or photo site mumbojumbo. Gene Davis provided the guidance:
Mike, have you tried doing it as I and others do, placing all the pics before posting?
You write your entire single-post entry, and let's say it will have three pics in this part of the story, with one or two paragraphs of text before each pic.
Where each pic will insert, leave a "pic insert" spot by hitting the RETURN key twice between paragraphs, instead of the usual once. Do the same at the end.
Then, attach all three of your .jpg files, but when done, instead of doing POST, do PREVIEW instead.
In PREVIEW, click the first of your attached pics to open it, and with cursor and mouse, context-click R key and choose COPY.
Now use the BACK button of your browser to take you back to the not-yet-posted message, which is still editable, and place the cursor at your pic mark, then R click, and click PASTE.
Repeat for your next two pics, and now you can POST.
I recently experimented with it on the "Cupola" thread. My second post of photos there http://forums.taunton.com/tp-breaktime/messages?msg=126223.14 I followed the above and it worked perfect. The key is however having your sizing correct, in the neighborhood of 50-100K.
Now if this works, will you marry me? Or maybe even Gene Davis as the post is his.

Thanks. I'm definitely done for the day, but I'll C&P that into the "Tips" doc that I've been compiling, and revisit it tomorrow. But I want to leave enough time for the two of us to pick out curtains.AitchKay
Take your time.
Gene's method worked well for me (edited my previous post to show my pics in the "Cupola" thread) and as you can see the post turned out great with very minimal "hoops" to jump through.

Cool. Will check it out.Thanks,AitchKay
I'm going to try it again.

Sorry, no more ideas. For me, works just as simply as I said... select copy from Picasa, select paste here.
from what I've been able to figure is that those thumbnailed pics are the same amount of data as a larger one unless you made a file spcifically downsized for the thumbnail and then it linked to the larger image at the photo site.
ETA but it does give us a way to circumvent the allotment pie.

"...from what I've been able to figure is that those thumbnailed pics are the same amount of data as a larger one..."
Not the way I do it - They're just very small versions of the original.
Someone else proposed just changing the width as it appeared on the screen - THAT would keep the file size the same, as you were thinking.

What you can do .... show a smaller picture right here on break time but make it 'clickable" to show the fullsize pic as it is stored elsewhere.Thumbnails are too small. Maybe something like 480x320 (or whatever the ratio is), to show on your BT post. Then click on teh pic and go see teh larger 800x600 or maybe 1024x764 sized pic.

I have no clue how to do that. But I'd be willing to try if it isn't too complicated.
Just the fact that I would have to have 2 versions of every picture would make it a bit more complicated. Keep in kind I'm dealing with a LOT of pictures - Maybe 20 to 30 a week at times.

As others have said... -each- of those three pics takes the same, long time to download. If you want to post a smaller pic, it is better to MAKE it smaller, then post. Just making it -look- smaller while it stays the same huge file size, does not cut down the frustration factor for those on dialup. It just makes details harder to see, for no good reason. Not a good tradeoff...Something is only impossible... Until it isn't...You are always welcome at Quittintime
You're missing the context of why I made that post.Someone commented on the frustration of a large photo being posted and having to scroll left/right/up/down to see what it was all about. My post simply had to do with how to control the display size of the photo. The three photos are indeed the same photo file, I was just trying to show whoever was asking that the display size can be controlled as well. I can make a 5MB photo 10 pixels wide or a 10kb photo 1000 pixels wide. Both file size and display size need to be considered.
Sorry about that.Point well made.=0)..Something is only impossible... Until it isn't...You are always welcome at Quittintime
640x480 works best as far as size goes. Any larger and people have to scroll around it. Smaller, and you lose the details. But size isn't everything! A pic at 640x480 dimensions, but 5 MEG in size ("weight"??) will take forever to see online. So, decrease the "density" of your pics with whatever photo editing software you use.For our purposes here online, small density and 640x480 on a web page looks pretty good. Higher density is best for printing photos.Of course your mileage may vary!

I don't know why it generated that code for your first one. For a photo to auto-display the code should be <IMG SRC=""> with the URL of the photo embedded between the quotation marks. The second one almost looks like the code for a clickable thumbnail. It has the code or a photo embedded within a clickable link. It has the image code above embedded inside the <A HREF=""></A> code. For that code, place the URL for the webpage you are linking to between the quotation marks, and place the text name of the link between the two >< marks. Example, if you wanted to link invite some people over to taunton.com and call it "breaktime", you'd write:Hey guys, come post at <A HREF="http://www.taunton.com">breaktime</A>, it's where all the idiots hang out.Remember, after doing that you need to check the box below the "POST" button that reads "Check here if HTML tags are in the message".At least I have to do that on Firefox.
Finally found the elusive "source". I was looking for a "button" like "post". If this don't work, could you let me know what I'm doing wrong... This came from photobucket. Edit; looks like I still doing something wrong.

Edit edit; now I'm just confused. In all other forums I just copy the "IMG" code under the pic on photobucket and paste it - bingo it works - here, no go.

Hey Huck,
Thanks for the little lesson there on getting photos in...
I uploaded my pics to flickr and I already had them resized to be right for positing here so I just used large for the size...
Everything seemed to come out all right...
Actually was easier to embed the pics using that method but kind of pain uploading the pics to flickr. I do see that there are some uploading tools that let you upload mass qty's of pics.
Thanks for your help....

Gunner, I found a link to your great hint on Cooks Talk. I just tried it but it didn't work for me. Excuse me if this has been covered already in this thread, I don't have time this morning to read the rest of the 200+ replies. I clicked on the request to recalculate my attachments. The attachment log now says "User limit:1000. Recorded Usage: 0" so I tried to post my picture again.Still no luck. The Attach Documents window says, "Sorry, you've exceeded your personal document space allocation. Personal document space allocation: 1000KB. Available: 1000KB." But they won't accept my attachment. Is there any other solution?
I've had the same problem. The only solution I know of is to host the pics elsewhere, like Photobucket or Flicker.
Thanks! I was hoping for a simple solution, maybe that's not to be.
I was also hoping for something different. But when I asked a question about it and addressed it to the mods, the thread was pulled. It seems that they don't even want to talk about it.
Using a photo storage and sharing site is an easy workaround to Taunton/Mozilla's clampdown on our pic posting capacity.
Having tried Shutterfly and Flickr, I think Shutterfly is a better way.
It's pretty seamless in the way it works. Easy to upload pics from your hard drive, and once there, all you need to do is cut pics and paste them into a Breaktime post.
See my thread in this Photo Gallery section, called something about "Cantilevered . . . "
I ended up deciding against Flickr because the only way I could get a pic into a post here was to switch to "source" mode when composing, before pasting in the HTML string for the Flickr pic, then switching back out of SOURCE to WYSIWYG mode, to continue composing.
That method was tedious, and what I found not desirable, was that a pic thus placed into a Breaktime post was a direct link back to my entire Flickr picture storage account. Click on Gene's Breaktime pic, go back into Gene's 3,475 boring pics. The dog show, the bike ride, all kinds of boring and irrelevant stuff.
Flickr won't let you do the cut/paste thing, which is what you want, so forget Flickr. Set up a Shutterfly free account, and start to load all your pics there, that you wish to post here and elsewhere.
I am using IE8, but IE7 worked the same in this respect. With two web browser windows open, one your Shutterfly page with your photo open, the other your work-in-progress being-composed-right-now Breaktime post, just go back and forth to do the cut then paste, and you are ready to click "POST."
It is actually easier than taking a photo from your hard drive, resizing it with a photo editor like Irfanview, then re-saving at that new size, then uploading it as a post attachment, then if you want the pic embedded in the post to make its accompanying text work best, copying it in preview, going back, pasting, etc. Whew! I'm worn out.
So, all you guys and gals that want to enhance your thread posts with photos and .jpg screencaps, do a little practice using Shutterfly, and start posting!

You haven't tried it. I can tell.
Do you use the M. Hussein Smith patented "embedded" method when posting here? Takes additional steps, but makes a pic in a post work so much better to tell the story. Embedding is seamless when using a photo site, and a whole lot faster than the MHS tango.
There is no resizing required when using the pics you have put up onto a photo site.

He did this when we had the big change. Didn't want to learn the new system. Same problem here. He has a website that he can upload them too and hot link them Or he can use a free account like flicker.
Before everyone starts rat packing me. Take a look around the web. There's not many forums that are this good that can handle this much picture posting. This is one of the few forums around that doesn't make you host your pictures somewhere else. It's got to be a big resource killer to host this much traffic and the pictures that this one does.
Why it's selective with certain people? I don't have a clue. Like I said before It's got to be a glitch. But if your gonna get all wussy about it and slam the door in a huff then you probably didn't get the idea behind this place to begin with.

The problem is FHB won't explain what's going on, and set expectations. For a very long time, unlimited pix were fine, and with the pimping of the gallery on the main site it's easy to assume that FHB _encourages_ posting of pix.But maybe all the complaints have grown shrill and FHB thinks it's a bunch of wolf-crying. Good luck with that.
You may have a point about the gallery pimping. And you are dead on about the silence. But what's a brother to do? You got to adapt and overcome.

I can't help but think that losing some of the regular contributors is exactly what they want. First there's the mass expulsion, then there's the introduction of annoying ads, next there's pushing everyone to contribute to the blogs instead of posting pictures here and now there's suddenly unexpected limits on attachments.
And of of this with very little communication. As Calvin said, post something controversial and they catch it right away, but ask a question or make a suggestion and it gets ignored.
Sometimes this place feels a little like a clique where people are maybe a little too comfortable with each other (teasing, criticizing, risque language, etc.).
Could it be that Taunton actually WANTS less participation?
I was planning on being a charter member of the FineHomebuilding Online, but I let my subscription lapse. I'm disappointed in the direction that their online offerings are headed. I haven't canceled my subscription to the magazine, which I think is still one of the best around, but if they destroy this online community whose members I have come to regard as friends, then that will be next.
I can't believe they don't hear the issues that have been brought up so many times. There must be a reason they choose not to listen.
"As Calvin said, post something controversial and they catch it right away, but ask a question or make a suggestion and it gets ignored."
I am not really sure, but I am guessing that the modrators don't have any control over the actual website picture hosting thingy. They can just view threads, and delete as they see fit.
Isn't Jean-Paul in charge of the website functions now?
It seems to me like he would be the person to contact.
Looks like that just magically fixed itself. No more pie chart for me. 10$bt says somebody accidentally enabled the feature on Friday and we got to deal with it over the weekend. indeed - none here either - I hoped that it was just a mistake - very glad that appears to be the case - someone tell stan foster - "there's enough for everyone"

that's bad - I just clicked on 'attach files' and the pie chart is back - hope Mzinga is just playing/upgrading the software and we are operating on some old code while they sort things out - it would be considerate to have a bit of communication from someone about the situation - "there's enough for everyone"
My pie chart was gone for a while, but it's back now as well. I posted one pic this AM which dropped my allocation to 930kb and I just went thru the reset dance and now have 1000kb again. WTF?http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
That pie box is now back for me, too. It wasn't there earlier this morning.Just so you know, you can load any images onto your site and link to them from there. So you're not in danger of running out of room. And I find hot linking images easier than the old upload attachment, embed in the post and try to delete, dance anyway. Chuck,You are quite welcome to email me a zip file of photos. You should have some software on either your PC or Mac that will let you drag and drop the photos to a zip file. I'll put them in a directory on my site, and email you some instructions on how to find them and post them to your threads here.No roadblocks to knowledge around here :)Best,

Somebody must be trying to rein in the cost needed to hold all this content, and pics need space.
My thought is that if they are concerned about storage space costs, then they ought to give users the ability to manage the pics, and the dialog and methods ought to be quick and easy.
Whatever is there now, ain't quick and easy.
One should be able to easily delete, upon selecting so, ALL the pics one uploaded into a single thread. One should also be able to override that and select just those pics within a thread one wants to toss.
As for storage, we ought to be told just how much all the Tavern chatter is taking, as a percentage of the total site. That is a pie chart I would like to see.
A user's total (as of right now) is apparently 1000 kb, which, if one compressed one's pics to 50, would give one enough for just one 20-photo thread.
Mike Smith needs 20 pics just to get to the donut break. Obviously, 20 is not going to do it for one of those footings-to-finish-let's-build-a-house threads.
That's too bad.
Maybe another way would be for the webpage weenies to figure a method to toss all pics uploaded over two weeks ago, but let users upload as many as they can do in the two-week rolling timeframe.
That way, we could all watch big exciting developments happen, but we would have to be semi-regular browsers. Anything Mike or Stan posted over two weeks ago would be gone.

>to figure a method to toss all pics uploaded over two weeks ago<
yes, there is a cost to maintain that space but it negates the value of those threads in most cases. if their going to go through the effort to delete the photos of the thread, might as well delete the entire thread. But that leads to an undesirable situ where there is no history of value, no threads to find as ref. info or answers to for who can get the search engine to work for them so all the questions will be asked over and over again which will get pretty lame in short order.
But for the tavern? No issue deleting anything that has had no posts in over 2 to 4 weeks.
My pie is back too but I've been able to zero it out every time I've tried.
All this talk about pie has me starving.

I agree, particuliarly for a forum like this. I participate in other forums on other topics (like running forums) and this one relies on photos to convey critical information relating to answering a question far more then the others (Example: "The plumber, in installing his piping, cut out a lot of the 2X floor framing. Here's a photo. Is it ok and what do you all think?"). Without a photo, conveying the situation accurately is tough.
Also, interestly enough, when I go to my photo list, at the top it says "RUNNERGU4" instead of "RUNNERGUY".

Gunner- I hope I am reading your post wrong...thats why I am slow and reluctant to respond.
I take your comment like I am snubbing this place,...raising my nose and slamming the door. You have to understand my retardedness towards computers and wanting to adjust to new methods.
I just off the cuff said I am out of here....and I did not have my nose turned up in the air. I just said...I am out of here...meaning I have some other places that I can post without hastles.
I literally meant I dont have time figuring new posting methods. I know this stuff is simple to most here..but look after all these years how I organize my photos. I have been the butt of several jokes and I loved it ,....and laughed along right back at myself. I welcome people laughing at me.....I have plenty of confidence in other areas of my life that make me welcome some being made fun of. Its like my openings in my shop not being trimmed out....I will trim them when I get to them.....maybe this year even! I just have so many priorities that I purposely let some seemingly simple stuff unattended....till I feel like giving it attention.
If I have to learn something....I most certainly can...but theres a certain threshold I have to be pushed hard enough to get across.
I am not mad at all at Taunton.....I just stated if they wanted me to post pictures...they basically would have to enable me to do so.
Its not hurting my feelings one bit.....

I hear what you are saying, and I am able to do so, but if Taunton (or their vendor) are not interested in hosting photos, why have a Photo Gallery section in Breaktime, and why encourage posting of photo's to the new Gallery? And frankly, it's a but suspicious that this is suddenly happening after the moderators have begun to encourage use of the new Gallery on the main site. But whatever is happening, the inability of our hosts to communicate in a timely and clear way plain stinks. I know, it's free, and we should be happy to be abused, but the reality is this forum serves a business purpose, or Taunton wouldn't provide it. So stop treating participants like whiny annoyances, and stop ignoring reasonable and respectful feedback. Or get out of the forum business. Either way is fine, but a poorly run forum tarnishes Taunton's brand and HURTS the business. I subscribe because I used to find the magazine useful, and now find this site useful, and want to support Taunton. My wife reads the magazine, I hardly ever do. Screwing up the forum makes Taunton not useful to me, and I won't resubscribe. Is that clear enough?

I'm on the verge of ordering the sat connection. This is getting slower - thinkmy provider is not keeping up with bandwidth requirements. I've got a grand total of one experience with sat service as an ISP, which is when I visit my parents. It's a move up from DU, but it's not exactly the greatest thing since sliced bread.Any chance of something like Walter's got with the ATT card? I'd have to think that's a world of improvement over the sat.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

No cell reception at home here. Maybe if I put up an antenna on the roof and amplify into the house. Got any experience with that?Talked to my BIL and he is mostly happy with his sat but not in bad weather and he ended up getting billed for over high bandwidth usage - teen kids downloading movies and musics on it.

No experience there, sorry. But you ought to be able to cobble together some kind of frequency amplifier. Paulbinct here would be a good resource for that.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

"No cell reception at home here. Maybe if I put up an antenna on the roof and amplify into the house. Got any experience with that?"I do.First off, cell-based broadband is MUCH better than satellite internet.I tried the sprint broadband a while back. I was able to get a signal for awhile, but overall, the service and the signal sucked. An antenna didn't make much, if any difference at all.Well, this year, I decided to try again. This time with Verizon. My local carrier.Hooked up with the little USB 760 modem, plugged into a cradlepoint 350 router. Wireless signal from there.Immediate signal.Poor signal. Very poor. But there.Next up, add a wilson trucker's omni, cell antenna. (Outside, with the cable run through the wall.) You have to buy an adaptor cable that you attach to the end of the antenna cable, so you can attach it to the usb modem.Big difference !Still not the best, but acceptable. Averaged 4 to 5 times faster than dialup. And often was ten to twenty times faster. And that is even though I had a good dialup. Averaged 4.2 and higher, rather than what others average.. 2.8But... the signal was not reliable. Even a barely acceptable signal would have been ok, if it would have been at least reliable.Waiting on the budget... I finally bought some more cable, and did a kludge job of raising the antenna, just to see if it would do any good.Boy howdy, did it !Now I am always online. The signal is strong. There are some dropouts, but they are not often, and they never last for more than a few seconds. I get the good speeds, much more often than the speeds of only 4 to 5 times dialup. It is at least as reliable as dialup ever was.I only raised it another 8 feet so far. I can raise it another 10 to 15 feet, before I am finished.I am hoping that the final raising of the antenna will get me into the constant high broadband speeds and keep me there.Bottom line, cell based broadband is worth looking into. And the right antenna and other setup, can make a difference. If you decide to try, check out 3gstore.com They have agreements with verizon and sprint, and can give big discounts and rebates because of that. But I'm here to tell you that if these people charged twice what others do, they would still be a huge bargain. Because of their service. If you have problems, they WILL patiently, reliably, courteously, and intelligently help you to get online.Their tech people do not follow a script on the screen. They KNOW what they are doing. They listen well. They figure out the problem quickly. And they figure out your own level of 'expertise' as well. So they tailor their tech work, accordingly. They don't talk down to you. And they don't talk over you. They are patient, they talk WITH you, and work out a solution in a way that -you- will understand. In english. From Texas, mostly. They got me online, even after the verizon script/techs had actually ruined my first modem. Sent it back to 3gstore, and they sent a replacement, and I have steered clear of verizon tech ever since. LOL)I have now been online reliably, with this connection, for three days.~~~My little belkin wireless g USB modem kakked. So I had to remove the cradlepoint router, and make a direct connection to the verizon usb modem, using a usb cable. But I still have a reliable connection.Today, I will be installing a lan card in my computer, and running a cat5e cable from that to the cradlepoint router. I'll put the verizon modem back in the router, and connect that way. While I CAN use the direct connection, I prefer having the router in the middle. After that, I'll raise the antenna some more. Just going to be a hassle dealing with stringing some guy wires to keep the top of that pole from swaying like a reed in a river.I'd rather put up some sort of tower arrangement. You know, with three legs, and bracing. But for now I'll have to settle for a single pole, with wires to hold it steady.Let me know, if you'd like more assistance....Max: Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Chief ?Chief: I don't know, were you thinking, "holy sh#t, holy sh#t, a swordfish almost went through my head" ?..You are always welcome at Quittintime
My experience with satellite internet is very limited, while I have been using a cellular connection for about two years when away from home.My in-laws in WV had satellite internet- they could get about 1 mb/s on a good day, whereas I have NO signal out there. None. They are in a pretty rural location, for what it's worth.
Jon Blakemore RappahannockINC.com Fredericksburg, VA
Thanks for those tips.I have to get up on the ladder to change my floodlight bulbs and some other stuff this weekend, so I will see what reception is like up there to get an idea how high I go with my antenna. Sounding more like the way to go. If I can get a cell repeated and amplified in the house, I might drop the land line or at least cut back to the minimum plan
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
"If I can get a cell repeated and amplified in the house"Very do-able ! And a lot easier than you might think.Check out that site, http://www.3gstore.comAlso, try getting all the way upon the roof, and standing up, to see what reception you have. One last, getting reception enough to make a phone call is a good omen. The oddas are very good that you'll be able to get a good broadband connection. But if your cell cannot make a call, that does not by ANY means, mean you are SOL on the broadband.People get broadband with reliable service and high speeds, even in places they cannot make a phone call. And you raise the odds by acouple of magnitudes when you are willing to put up an antenna, amplifier, repeater, etc....Max: Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Chief ?Chief: I don't know, were you thinking, "holy sh#t, holy sh#t, a swordfish almost went through my head" ?..You are always welcome at Quittintime

I think you bring up a very good point. Many people (certainly myself) find the posting methods confusing and
tedious. Hey, were tradesmen and builders give us a break! Then another portion of us suffers when Someone (Like me) sticks
some huge blurry picture up. I KNOW it can be simpler and less tacking on the server.
Now....I will say that when I have to learn something...I do! There is a lot of stuff I had to learn building curved stairways....or building the machines I fly in. I had to learn those things...and I enjoyed learning them.
But throw a computer in my face...and my eyes glaze over......after all these years...I finally found someone that told me over the phone how to cut and paste. I told him the last time and cut and pasted anything was in 1960 when I was in kindergarten! This one person just talked down to my computer level.....which was WAY down....
and told me how to simply hit ctrl and the x.....after whatever I wanted to paste was highlighted....then hit ctrl an V to transfer it.
My big motivation for me to learn this complex computer trick stemmed from me trying to send otheres to some of my U-tube videos.....they have real long complex addresses that was driving me nuts trying to individually write down with pen and paper all the numbers...characters...hypens...colons....hash marks....etc....that has to be perfect along with the spaces.....
I cried uncle one day and called a guy in California...and he then told me in two sentences how to do it.
I just have a complex mind in some areas....balanced by a retarded corner in my head that handles the computer tasks.
I doubt I will ever change....

Stan,
If you want to copy/paste using your mouse only and bypass using the keyboard
here is the process I typed out for someone a while back in 108402.70
using a thread post number link as an example.
and yes, I copy/pasted to get it here. snorK*
Also, any word text will transfer the same way,
and if pictures have previously been posted on Breaktime and the copy/paste item is taken from Breaktime
then those pictures can also be transferred the same way.
Copy/Paste from other internet sources will not guarantee they will work or just might work for a short while before the dreaded redx appears.
From 108402.70:
"Left click the mouse and hold it down without releasing it when the cursor is next to the 108402.1 in the message numbers at the upper right of the page:
108402.67 in reply to 108402.1
and drag the cursor across the number 108402.1 until the whole number is highlighted in blue then release the left click on the mouse.
That number 108402.1 is now locked in your browser and as long as you don't copy anything else or release it anywhere else it will stay in there
so you can then go to the thread and the post you are in the process of making which you want to impart that numbered link into...
place the cursor in the post you are making in the location you want to place the link
right click the mouse which opens a window
scroll up to the highlighted in blue word 'paste' and then left click on paste
which will deposit the link into the body of the message.
If the word 'paste' is not highlited in black before you scroll up to it then you lost the copy of the link somehow."
Robyn,
I have found an own computor way to get pix onto your post site. It gets the pix on the input post screen; but after hitting preview or post the pix only shows up as an image place holder. If someone can figure out why the pix itself doesn't show-up this might resolve the file problem.
Here's how I got the pix to appear in my input post.
1) In Photoshop resize to 3" and save the small file as a new name.
2) In Windows Explorer find the pix file. Right click then select 'Open With" "Internet Explorer". A new window will open and the pix will be displayed.
2) Copy to clipboard [ctrl][C].
3) Open the BT post screen, Type as desired. Then paste [ctrl][V]. The picture will appear correctly.
Now if you look at the post with Preview or by Posting all you see is a place holder not the pix.
Maybe you can get someone to tell us why the pix doesn't appear.
Here is an example.

"Got two red x's is seeyou thread taken from Quittin Time but everyone else seemed to be talking like they were seeing them. Don't understand."I don't either - would you try your first sentence again?"there's enough for everyone"
Your picture never makes it off of your computer. You can see it when you try, because the link is to your own computer. And since you are on your own computer, your browser, finds it.But no one else's browser will ever se the pic.You -have to- actually upload the picture to somewhere on the internet. Then link to that location...Something is only impossible... Until it isn't...You are always welcome at Quittintime
I understand what you are saying; but, if I use the same procedure discribed above but paste to an e-mail in Outlook I can send the pix and the recipient on a differant computor can see the pix. I just tried it. The incomplete copy/upload has to do with the BT forum not the copy/paste issue. They should be able to correct that.
That's because your email program automatically sends the picture as an attachment to the email. The picture file gets sent right along with the email. When you link to a picture on your own computer from here, the picture file stays on your computer. The ONLY people that are going to see the pic, are people who have access to your computer. In other words... You. (If people COULD see the pic, you should be worried...)..Something is only impossible... Until it isn't...You are always welcome at Quittintime
Sorry, That's not correct. The original pix is not attached to the recipients inbound e-mail. It is infact a pasted in image.
Also the picture on BT is not a link to the file on my computer. If that was the case no one could view ihe pix if my computor was off. Also BT would have no concern about file size etc. since it would not be stored on there system

Jim,It IS correct.Your email program does the job automatically. It may not -look- like an attachment, to you, or to the recipient, but the picture file is indeed included with the email.Try this.Write an email to yourself. Send it. When it gets back, look at the size of the email. Now, write the -identical- email to yourself. This time, (and the ONLY difference), add a picture. When that email gets back to you, look at the size of the email. The email with the picture is larger, because it includes the picture. The ONLY way for others to see a pic in a post at BT, is if the picture file is uploaded to the internet, somewhere. You have to upload it to Breaktime, when you are making your post, in the first place. (Attachment). Or you have to upload it somewhere else on the net, that is a public place, then link to that. When you link to a pic on your computer... No one else can see the pic, whether your computer is on, off, or in the twilight zone. It simply cannot be seen, unless your computer is a server, constantly connected to the internet, and completely open to the public. (Even then, there will be problems.)Think of it this way...Tin cans on a string. If that string is cut, you can't hear anything. You HAVE to be able to establish a string between the picture, and the viewer's browser, or that viewer is not going to be able to see the picture. You can establish a string between your computer, and the internet, for your own personal purposes. But unless you do as I said above, make your computer a server, permanently connected to the internet, and completely open to the public, you CANNOT establish a string, that others can use to see your picture. If you upload the pic to someplace public on the internet, then a string is easily established, that allows others to see the pic. It's called a link...Something is only impossible... Until it isn't...You are always welcome at Quittintime

You can't copy anything but TEXT and paste it in a message. You have two options. One is to use the upload feature and transfer it from you computure and save a copy of it in the forums servers. If you just do that then a link will show at the bottom of the message after it is posted (or in preview) and if you click on that then it will open the pix. After you do that you can then preview it and open the pix and copy and paste it using IE. But what that actually does is paste in text with has in it the commands to cause the the browser to look to the link and get the pix and display it directly in the message.Or you can post your picture on a Publicly available picture hosting website such as those mentioned earlier. And for those rare cases it In 99.98% of the cases your computure is on publically available on the internet and for those case you need to address the picture as "http://...." and not "C: ..." that tells the browers to look into your own computer, but the source. And that is sometimes confusing because it will show for the person trying to post the pix, but not for anyone else..

Yes, I can see it.But you did not copy the picture, which is what I think that the other guy was trying to do.What you copied was the link to the picture.http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9d834b3127ccec70acec8f04700000040O00AZuW7Nu5Zt2QPbz4e/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/And being MS they thought that they knew what you want and did not give you the option and automatically added the HTML to make it display that picture. For some using other than explorer they need to add the IMG tag and click the HTML box below the Post button..

I know it's a copied link, Bill. But it's still a simple copy>paste operation, conveniently done with both windows open, Breaktime and Shutterfly.
You said: For some using other than explorer they need to add the IMG tag and click the HTML box below the Post button.
More clicks, but it ought to go quickly once one has practise.

I was being explicit because the guy a few threads up was trying to copy and paste the pixels and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. The other thing that throws people is that the photo album is setup as private. But the owner has logged into and their computer has the cookies that tell the photo site that the user is logged on.But no other computer has those cookies thus they get the Red X..
