I KILLED THE TAPPAN HEAT PUMP
Oh Help and Bother!!! I screwed up.
It’s 85 at 9pm here and the AC won’t work. Well actually, all of it won’t work.
U c, my ‘touch screen’ thermostat refused to respond and I hit it too hard, and I guess I crossed a wire or something. Anyway there is NO power to the heat pump. Last time I did something similar I turned off the breakers to both the pump and the air handler and, after I turned them back on, I waited the required 20 minutes and the whole thing reset itself. But this time no luck. So then I opened the thermostat and disconneted both the power wire and the 2 batteries to disable it, and, did the whole turn off thing again so I could use a thermostat in a different zone, but that didn’t work either. All thermostats are off as well as the computer unit on the unit that directs the zones.
The AC people say they can’t come till MOnday. You guys have saved me before on HVAC crisises, can u do it again?

Quit bashing the thermostat.
And if faced with the same problem, I'd replace the thermostat, connecting it as it was and try the reset.
Can't come till monday? I'm sure someone can come b/4 monday. You might pay the price.
You have a separate zone controller? That may be hosed up somehow.
First I'd do as suggested and replace the thermostat (they're cheap). (But note that you should try to find a heat pump t-stat.)
Also, look around and see if you don't have a manual for the zone controller. If it's a separate unit it probably has some built-in diagnostics. Likewise, the HP likely has a diagnostic LED display or some such, so look for that and info about it.
If you can get the brand/model #s off the zone control and heat pump someone here (or you) may be able to find the info for them on the web, or someone here might even be familiar with them.
Any brand name on the (presumed) zone controller? (It's not necessarily Tappan.)
If all the lights are off it sounds like the 24V transformer is out.
Grab one of your test leads with an alligator at each end and go out to the HP and jumper the appropriate terminal (look at your wiring diagram) to bypass the TS and get cooling.
Another way on Rheem and Ruud AC/HP combos , which have the reversing valve in the nominal AC mode, is to....described below. This wont work on most other brands, you will get heat vs. cooling.
Wait, you have a simple AC only, or an AC/Heat pump?
If simple AC, go to the condensor cabinet outside and put a piece of duct tape across the contactors to hold them closed, remove when the house gets cold. Repeat as needed.
Too confusing, you are SOL.....
