Didn’t want to highjack Nuke’s thread so I’m starting another one…
Actually my home is not too bad but other homes about 5 kilometers from mine are.
The picture below is of one of the townhouses having problems. The homes were built on farm land..actually more like a swamp. Lots of clay. About 100 recently-built homes have been sinking. Lots of foundation damage and large cracks in the walls.
The builder is actually paying (voluntarily) for all the repairs and the new-home warranty is being extended for the homeowner.
As shown in the picture, they are excavating around the house. They will then saw-cut the foundation wall at about mid-height and then level the house. To prevent further settlement of the soil, they are backfilling the excavated area with rigid foam blocks, to reduce the weight. A friend of mine had his house repaired and there is about $20k worth of foam at each house. There is about 12″ of top soil above the foam. His heating bills have gone down…

Yikes, what a nightmare. I see you're in Ottawa. You guys tend to have a bit of frost too.
